Zara's POV
"Zara come and help us out in the kitchen"
I looked up from the book I'd been trying to concentrate on, to no avail to see mami by the door, the look on her face said it all; I had to go with her; with a sigh I got off the bed and followed her down to the kitchen. Hafsat the house help was standing by the gas cooker, looking into a steaming pot, on the kitchen table I saw some carrots, cucumbers and a big cabbage
"What are you making" I asked mami
"Rice and stew, why don't you make the Cole slaw?"
"O.k. it's not like I have a choice"
"Zara" mami cautioned
"O.k."
I picked a carrot and started grating it while mami sat on one of the kitchen chairs.
"Sadiq's coming over for dinner" she said
"O.k."
Sadiq is my all time best friend, has been since we moved from Kaduna to Abuja 11 years ago. They lived right next to our house and He had come over with his mum to welcome the new neighbors'. He passed by my room and the both of us hit it off from there
"Where are the twins?" I asked
"Aneesa is in her room. Studying and Abbas is outside playing ball"
"Mmhmm" I answered and continued grating my carrot.
Sadiq's POV
"So how's Zara doing?"
I and abbas were coming home from the Mosque after Maghrib (evening prayer)
"I don't know Ya Sadiq, that's not my sister anymore. She's always staring into space, holding a novel that she doesn't read, I think the only thing that has not stopped her from completely withdrawing into herself is Ameera...and then the times when Mami makes her do things around the house"
"It's really hard for her, I don't recognize her either"
We had come to our houses now I looked at the twin houses and remembered the old days when I used to sleep over at Zara's place whenever I'd stayed over too late
"Go on Abbas, tell Mami I'll be over soon let me see Mama first"
"o.k." he said and walked on to their house, I waited until he'd gone through the gate before I entered our own. I found Mama in her room; she was on her prayer mat still doing her dua's (supplication). I sat down on the bed and waited for her to finish.
'You are back"
"Yes, good evening"
"Evening"
"I wanted to let you know that I was going over to Mami's for dinner and I might stay out a little late, I want to talk to Zara, so is there anything you might need me to do for you before I leave?"
"No no, go ahead, how's Zara doing?, the last time I went over to see her mum, she was sleeping"
"She's fine but she's still not talking much"
