Six weeks and I was in a meeting regarding my early (like two weeks away, early) graduation. I had sat 3 years worth of theory and practical tests, passing and excelling. I'd had a four week field experience and had had to kill Natalie Daskov after she turned Strigoi to try freeing her father out of the school's holding cell. After he'd kidnaped and used Liss for her powers. They were trying to figure out if I had enough college credit for regular classes that I could have my trial tomorrow. With the way I'd been feeling lately I would've preferred to get it done with.
"I would prefer to get it over with. Otherwise I'm basically sitting around for two weeks twiddling my thumbs."
"Rose. You know I'd be pushing you hard; training and conditioning with you all day."
"Yeah, yeah I know."
"Rose?"
"Yes Alberta?"
"I'll have your trial ready tomorrow. Until then take a breather. You're going to need it."
"Thanks Alberta."
"Go home you two and relax."
"Thanks." We left.

The next morning, however, disaster struck. The uneasy, queasy feeling I'd had for the last two weeks decided to turn into nausea that sent me hurling into Dimitri's bathroom faster than the speed of light. Screw my life. "Roza" Dimitri rubbed soothing circles into the small of my back while holding my hair out of the way. "What's going on?"
"I'm not sure Dimitri" I almost cried.
"You were fine yesterday," he observed.
"No, I wasn't. I've been feeling uneasy for the last three weeks."
"Three weeks and you said nothing? Roza that's not ok- if something is wrong I want to know, we're in this together."
"Sorry Comrade."
"Roza? How long has it been since your last cycle?"
"Shit! Eight weeks. My last period was eight weeks ago."
"Oh Roza, oh my Roza."
"Dimitri" I really was on the verge of tears now.
"Rose, you're going to get through that trial and graduate today. That's what matters for now. We'll deal with this tonight." He pulled me into a hug and stroked my hair lovingly.
"One thing at a time right comrade?"
"Baby steps."
"Damn you Dimitri! You said that on purpose! You're supposed to be getting me mentally prepared for the test of my life and all you're doing is reminding me of the miracle I'm carrying here!"
"Sorry mama."
"There you go again; not helping Dimitri. You're having way too much fun with this."
"Sorry Rose. I'm just happy that's all."
"Hmm. Well could you hold off on being contagious? It's rather distracting."
"How 'bout I make breakfast while you shower?"
"Fine. I need to get focused."

And I did. It showed two hours later when I nailed my trial (without causing a miscarriage thank god!). Another hour later and I was promised as Lissa's guardian. Dimitri and I spent the rest of the day- and all night- together. He, naturally, made lunch and dinner. After dinner we headed out for a 'quick' trip to Missoula to see a human doctor for blood tests and run normal home tests. All come back positive. My life had a sick sense of humour. I was happy about having a family. But the thought of the rumours that would circulate, and the stares that would run alongside, were ruining the joy of an early graduation. And the joy of a prospective family with Dimitri.
