Another day of school had almost passed by with no incidents for me, which is very rare considering I'm very clumsy and gravity tends to bully me every chance it can get. I had almost forgotten that I was cursed with the ability to trip over nothing at all when it happened. In between changing classes, of course.I earned MANY giggles from the lower class men that still had not gotten use to my superpower while those in my grade stepped over me, shaking their heads and muttering disapproving comments to themselves.
I debated about whether or not I should just lie there and let the rest of the school flatten me and have the janitor scrape me up later when I finally decided I didn't shower that morning to have peoples nasty feet stepping on my hair.
With a grunt, I began picking myself up off the floor, keeping my eyes down as to not make eye contact and make my slip anymore embarrassing.
"Are you okay?" A small voice asked on the verge of hysterics.
"I am, the floor is the one that needs a band aid."
I looked up into the eyes of a beautiful blonde girl, her eyes a very bright green color. She was obviously in 7th grade, the lowest grade in our high school. She was so small and fragile looking, but gorgeous beyond words.
I tore my gaze from her as she giggled at me. I palmed my eyes as I couldn't stop thinking that I had to be a pervert to find a 13 year old beautiful.
"Um, have I... seen you here before?" I asked, blinking rapidly trying to get my sight back.
"No, it's my first day. My brother will be transferring in tomorrow, he's a junior this year!" She exclaimed, obviously excited a senior paid any attention to her.
"That's sweet kid. If you ever get lost, you can always ask me and I'll help you get where you need to go."
I tried to step around her and head for my last class of the day, but she stepped too, directly blocking my path with her small frame.
"What's your name?" She questioned, her eyes glowing happily.
"If you don't leave me alone, we'll both get detention and I can assure you, I won't be happy being stuck with you for an hour after school."
She pouted, her lower lip poking out.
"I'm Emma." She whimpered, still expecting me to answer.
"I'm Chloe, now if you'll excuse me-"
"Bye Chloe." She skipped away, the little blue dress I didn't notice she was wearing flared out behind her.
"Weird child." I muttered as I hurried to my next class.
I couldn't focus on biology that day, my mind kept going back to the weird little girl, Emma. For her to be 13, she sure seemed like she was 3. I've never felt the need to befriend someone after the whole high school seen them fall, that's just the farthest thing from a normal persons mind. People either point and laugh, or they pity the faller so bad they hurry by as to not make their embarrassment worse.
"Chloe, if cells are boring you, you could always stay after school and learn about them." My teacher, Mrs. Claire, scolded, ripping me from my thoughts.
The whole class turned to gawk at me, some were grinning wildly at me being in trouble.
"I'm sorry I just have a lot on my mind. I'm listening."
"Good, head out of the clouds and in your notebook please."
I scribbled in my notebook and drew stick figures fighting each other as if in a war zone the rest of the class to pretend like I took notes. It must've been convincing because I didn't get called out again.
Eventually the bell rang and students hurried out of the class, some shooting glances my way. I'm sure I'd be the gossip for the next few hours over another fall of mine, which I was beyond used to at that point.
I grabbed my backpack and slung it over one shoulder and began to head out of the class.
"Hi Chloe." A familiar voice squeaked.
Immediately to the right of the class door stood Emma, a broad smile on her face.
"Woah, no no no. I've seen Children of the Corn you need to back off you weird cultists child thing!" I demanded, forming a cross with my fingers.
"I'm not a cultist, I'm a student. Duh!" She rolled her eyes and flipped her straight hair.
"Okay, well go somewhere else and be a student."
"I wanted to know if you'd walk me home, I moved in a few houses down from you." She smiled up at me, little dimples popping.
"I don't walk. I drive."
"Can I ride with you then?"
"What if I had plans after school?" I demanded, walking past her.
Her small legs fell into step with my long ones.
"You don't." She said confidently.
"And how do you know?"
"You don't have friends but me."
Ouch.
"If I take you home today, I'm NOT picking you up tomorrow and I'm NOT bringing you home anymore. We're not friends, you little prick."
"That's why you're gonna drive me home though right? Because we aren't friends?" She giggled, knowing she had already won.
I mean, I couldn't let the kid walk home we lived four miles away it was common courtesy to let her ride with me.
"You're a pain."
"And you're a weirdo." She countered.
"True."
I held the door open for her as we exited the school and we began the walk down the sidewalk to where I park my car. This was gonna be a long ride home.
