Open Window

I sat in my car, the windows rolled down, the spring breeze gently wafting into my face carrying the scent of smelly, acne covered teenagers.

Okay, maybe it was because I park near the school dump, but I mean, the kids that attend here aren't much better smelling, in my defense.

Knock knock knock

I jumped and squealed, turning to look at whoever almost made me pee myself.

"Is there a reason you still knocked on my door with the window down?"

Hayden shrugged, his tall frame bent over until his face was a few inches away as he peered into my car.

"You didn't even hear me walk up, I just thought maybe you'd hear me knock."

"I'd have heard my name perfectly well, too, though."

He nodded.

"Uh, yeah, probably so..." he ran his fingers through his dark hair nervously.

"Look, can I come over later? I need to tell you somethings..."

"Woah, woah, Mr. Menopause, I barely know you! You could be a murderer or something!" I demanded, cringing into my seatbelt.

"Don't you think I'd have killed you while it was just you and I in the classroom if I wanted to do that?"

I pursed my lips. He had a point.

"Can you come over as soon as you get home? It'll be really hard to explain to my dad about why I had a boy over while he was gone."

"Sure, leave your bedroom window open."

"Um, what the fu-"

"Please just listen to me!" He growled.

"Hayden!" A small voice exclaimed.

"I have to go. Get home quickly and safely. I'll meet you in your bedroom." He whispered in a rush.

When I sat gazing up at him, totally awestruck by his features and dumbfounded by his request, he sighed impatiently. He leaned over me and turned the key, starting my car up.

"Get out of here!" He demanded, standing and turning to face his sister.

Emma glared at me, still unhappy with me I assumed. I rolled my windows up and kept my eyes down until I could put my car in reverse.

Their family was going to be the death of me.

I paced around my room nervously, gnawing on my bottom lip, throwing glances at my open window every few seconds.

There are no trees near my window, nor is there a lattice. I may have a heart attack if this dude shows up without the help of a ladder.

I sat nervously on the end of my bed and ran my hands across my face, my mind constantly reminding me I've never had a boy in my room before.

I felt the bed sink in a little next to me and my breathing stopped. I contemplated on whether or not I wanted to look up from my hands at what was next to me.

"Uh, hey?"

I jumped to my feet and sprang about ten feet away from the boy on my bed.

"WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?!" I screeched.

"I was thinking that just earlier today you was mad I didn't use my voice to get your attention when you had an open window, so I used my voice this time."

This kid... Wow... What a smart ass.

My heart hammered into my chest as I studied him.

"Are you gonna come sit down?" He asked gently.

"Probably not." I crossed my arms over my chest, trying to cover up the fact that I was terrified of what he wanted to say and oddly amused by the hormones that ran through my body at having a boy in my room with me.

"I won't hurt you." He promised.

"I'm not scared of that..." my voice trailed as I watched his eyes light up with the realization I couldn't say out loud.

"I could stand and let you sit?"

"No it's okay." I sighed and swallowed the lump in my throat, bravely crossing the floor and sitting on the head of my bed, my bottom resting on a pillow.

"You wanted to talk, let's hear it."

He sighed and turned to face me, his eyes full of sadness and pain.

"Okay, here goes nothing...."
