Apologies

My Altima gently hums to life as I steal a glance at myself in the rear view mirror. My brown hair was as wavy as always and my skin seemed to stay pale although we lived near the coast. I studied my features until finally I glanced up into my own eyes, bright blue with a hint of drowsiness to them.

I wasn't necessarily ugly, but I wasn't a head turner either. I was what one may say was average, which is fine with me. I keep enough attention by my two left feet anyways.

I pulled out of the driveway and made it halfway down our road when a dark blue, almost black, colored Honda Accord pulled out behind me and was nerve rattling close.

I peered into my rear view once more and made out a small blonde head in the passenger seat and a brunette in the drivers.

"I'm going to assume my new neighbors are behind me." I muttered unhappily.

In my rear view I caught Emma smiling and waving as if she saw me watching them.

I decided to keep my eyes straight ahead for the rest of my drive to the school.

When I finally made it to the school, the new siblings pulled into the parking spot directly beside mine and I groaned loudly. Before I could take my seatbelt off, Emma was outside my door and was knocking on the glass.

I screamed in fear, there was no way this chick could've already made it out of her car and to mine before I could unbuckle my seat belt. Just no freaking way.

I opened the door and stepped out cautiously, eyeing the possible demon spawn in front of me.

"Hi Chloe!" She beamed.

"Emma." I answered rather skeptically.

"Hayden, this is Chloe." She said waving the sexy god of a man over.

"Learn to drive faster."

"Learn personal space applies to vehicles." I snapped back.

His eyes narrowed as he approached us.

"We're going to get along just fine." His lovely voice oozed with sarcasm.

"We're already off to a great start. I like obeying traffic laws and you like sniffing car ass."

One eyebrow shot up at that one.

"Car..ass...?"

I nodded, turning and walking away from the weird pair.

They immediately fell into step with me, one on each side.

"Chloe, Hayden saw you yesterday! He said you was being a snooping Tom." Emma giggled.

"How'd you know who I was?" I demanded, turning my attention to Hayden.

"I watched you drop Emma off from school. I had all night to hear about her new bestie."

I snorted.

"I don't do besties. I don't have friends."

"That's because friend is singular, there's only me. And Hayden can be your friend."

"I'd rather not be." He growled, quickening his pace, leaving me alone with Emma as we walked into the school together.

"Mood swings much?" I asked the little girl.

"I dunno..." she mumbled, obviously not wanting to mention it anymore.

"I've got math class, I can't be late to that. You almost made me late yesterday, so go ahead and head to your class and make friends!" I snarled a bit too hatefully.

"I could tell you the same thing, but you obviously aren't capable of that!" She hurled at me, her voice drowning in hurt.

"Ouch." I muttered.

She lowered her head and took off running down the hall towards the stairs just like she did yesterday.

I never meant to be mean to her and break her heart.. I'm just not friend material.

I had an apology to start working on for when I seen her again. I sighed deeply. This was going to be a very, very, long day.
