grew up in a tiny beach town with her mother and father, her brother Tony, and her half-sister Alexis. she was always expected to become a housewife like her mother was, but wanted to be a doctor. after her father's sudden death when she was 19, she broke up with her boyfriend Sai, who she dated for three years, and moved to new york city to attend medical school, despite her mother insisting she was only going to fail.

after finishing school and getting her degree, Lyra was hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, having spent all her inheritance from her father (which wasn't much), and taking out tons of student loans, to pay her tuition. she was unable to afford to pay rent, or buy groceries. however, she had become close friends with Ansel's girlfriend, Molly, and one of his crew members, Helene. after discovering her situation, Helene offered Lyra a position in the crew so she would be able to make enough money to pay off her debt, and move to Boston to work under her idol in a fancy hospital.
