Unfinished Business

Of course the brief reprieve from Gabriel's tricks didn't last. He started up on his games just a week after I'd officially mated to Sam. I expected it, so I was ready for the first attack. The boys were out on a hunt when the call came. Castiel had been trapped in Heaven, the one place I wasn't really welcome anymore.

I could feel him calling out to me, and I ached with the supressed Grace it would take to free him. My family needed me and I was useless. Gabriel knew exactly what he was doing. He was going to lock them all up seperately, in places I couldn't get to. Well, the joke was on him. I still had the Grace to make a weapon to fight back. But for the time being, I needed to protect my mate.

Appearing beside Sam was not the best idea when he was in the middle of a hunt. I hadn't thought it out well enough, clearly. Oops. I was lucky though, that Dean realized who I was before Sam could attack.

"Wait, Sammy! It's just Rose," he said, smiling at me. I smiled back, before I remembered why I was there. My smile dropped and there was instant concern.

"Dean, I'm so sorry. Before I say anything else, I want you to know that this isn't what I wanted," I told him, addressing only him. It would hurt him most.

"What happened?" he demanded.

"Gabriel is back to causing trouble. He's locked Castiel in Heaven, one of the only places I can't get into. And now he'll be coming to both of you. I can protect you, as long as I'm with you,' I told them.

"What do you mean, locked him in heaven? He can't get back to us?" Dean asked, trying not to be upset. It was written quite plainly on his face that he was not happy.

"He can't leave heaven until Gabriel takes whatever binding he put on him, off. And this is Gabe we're talking about... that could be never. One sure way to remove them is to kill him... but I'm the only one who can do that, and I need to focus on keeping you both safe right now. Castiel would never forgive me if he took you, Dean. And I'd never forgive myself if he came anywhere near my own mate," I explained, frowning.

"Can you get Cas back without killing Gabriel? Because I'd like to do that part myself," Dean grumbled.

"I can attempt to negotiate, but we already know what he wants. He wants me," I reminded them. Sam was already shaking his head.

"We're going to play his game. The quickest way to get Cas back is to pretend we don't know what's going on. If Dean and I pretend you haven't told us what he's up to, he'll think he still has the upper hand. You can stay with us most of the time, but to make it believable, you still have to spend time at your house with Kali," he spoke up.

"He'll just take you!" I snapped, annoyed. "I won't allow that."

"He's going to find a way to take us anyways. Wouldn't you rather it be on our own terms?" Dean said softly. "Sammy is right. We can win this way. Playing ignorance isn't my favorite, but it might be what we need."

"Rose, we need you to trust us. We've been hunters our entire lives, and we know how to play this game. Do you think you can trust us?" Sam asked.

"Of course I trust you. But what you don't understand is that I physically can not place you in danger if it can be helped. The Grace inside of me would fight with me, possibly killing any control I have. I could accidentally kill you by trying to protect you," I responded quietly.

"You wouldn't. I know you. You could never hurt us, even if you had to fight yourself the whole way to not protect us," he replied.

"You can't know that..." I was losing this battle, and I could see it. They'd already made up their minds, and I was willing to bet that Castiel had shown them how to send me back to my home by force if it became necessary. They were going to get themselves caught and possibly killed, and I couldn't stop it. Well, I wasn't going to sit by and watch it happen, damn it!

"I do know that," he said, trying to take my hand and meeting my eyes. I shook my head and tore my hand away.

"If you're so sure this is a good idea, I'm leaving right now. I'm not going to come back for a while, either. It'll be easiest if I just don't see you," I snapped, turning my back on them. "Dean, you should be able to communicate with Castiel. At the very least, he will hear you."

And with that parting sentence, I was gone.

Two and a half weeks went by before Gabriel took Dean. I could now feel his aura in Hell, and it made me wince every time. Another place I couldn't go. Wonderful. Cas was going to murder me. Sam was perfectly fine, and I was thankful for that. I'd made Kali lock me in my bedroom with a special spell. It would only break when I was sure Sam was truly where I could no longer reach him. I had to trust that he knew what he was doing.

In the meantime, I was working on changing my Grace. I hadn't been lying when I told Gabriel I had a vial of Grace from a different angel. I was slowly replacing my normal Grace with his. Gabriel's Grace was being caught in a seperate vial, where it would become my own personal weapon later. I was ensuring that even if he managed to kill my mate, I would never be bound to him. Actually, since he changed Kali's Grace, he would have no true mate to bond to anymore. That fact made me incredibly happy. He'd be all alone.

He didn't seem to sense what I was doing until I was almost done. And that is when he took Sam. Instead of sending Sam to Heaven or Hell, he locked Sam in Purgatory, forced to wander but never be seen. What Gabriel didn't seem to realize was that Purgatory was parallel to the realm on which I reside. It's one of the few places I actually can get to.

"I know what you're thinking, Freyja, and I wish you wouldn't," Kali told me when she found me leaving my room to visit my mate. I shook my head.

"I can't leave him there alone with the Reapers, Kali. How horrible would that make me?" I replied.

"It would make you sane! You're going to ruin the entire plan if you show Gabriel that you can reach your mate still. And you're not done with the Grace transition. You're vulnerable. Give it a few more days, until you're stronger. Please," she begged.

I always hated it when Kali was right. This time, I couldn't find a valid arguement. So, I would go to Sam in just a few days. Until then, I'd finish changing my Grace and fashion that weapon. Gabriel would never see me coming.

If only that were true.
