BETWEEN THE LINES

"I'm going to die." I said through the phone with gritted teeth, my back lying against the soft cushions of the couch, and my eyes trained on the white ceiling, the phone pressed against my right ear.

Jungkook had left an hour ago, and I swear to god, he always leaves me so frustrated and with my thoughts running in circles.

The person on the other line of the call was silent. Then, "What?"

"I think," I said thickly, "you should prepare some nice flowers for me. My laptop will be yours, too. Or maybe you can donate it to a hopeless writer."

"Mhm."

"Tell my mom to take well care for her chickens. Treat them nicely because she couldn't do it to her daughter—"

"Is this an in-depth character portrayal for your book?"

"—and that I lived a long, good life of pursuing my passion. Unlike someone..."

"Nari..." Iseul warns through the phone, before letting out an agitated sigh.

"Don't give my insurance money to my mother, give them to aunt Jill who gives me free food, and treat yourself with sweets."

"Hold on. I don't know what's going on, but no one's dying here. No one's giving out insurance money, or donating a dead writer's laptop that's probably cursed with your bad luck. Now explain," Iseul said calmly, and I sighed slowly.

"I wanna kill someone." I scoffed, rubbing my face as I stare blankly at the ceiling. No amount of killing could even make me satisfied now. I wanted nothing more than to wipe off that jerk facade Jungkook has.

"Kill? Who?"

"A demon." And he goes by the name Jeon Jungkook.

"You can't kill a demon, Nari." Iseul said patiently on the other line, and I sighed again, before nodding to myself.

"Of course I can't, that's why I'm going to die so I can free myself from it." I said, "He teases me to no end, calls me endearing names but makes it sound so twisted, and he asked me to go on a date with him tomorrow, and I don't have any goddamn thing to wear. And I'm so fucking close to giving up." I said to myself solemnly.

"Should I just die?" I added, seriously considering the thought.

"Wait...date? A date? You're going on a date? With whom?"

"The guy I kissed while drunk." I said through the phone, sitting up straight as I groaned. "Why did I have to get so drunk that I had to kiss someone? Are the gods finally punishing me?"

Iseul gasped, "Nari, that's great!"

"I know—wait, what?"

"Finally, you're all grown up. I thought you were going to end up like your mom who lives with chickens now."

"Hey, that's not nice," I said, furrowing my brows, then I let my back fall to the couch again. Poor Iseul doesn't know it's kind of his boss I was going to date and cursing about to her.

"This is great. At least one of us has a chance of getting married."

"Wow, I didn't think you'd be so happy with my misfortune."

"Oh, please," Iseul said dismissively, "It's anything but a misfortune. I think I know a way to what you're agonizing about a while ago."

"What is it?" I said excitedly, "Flip them the middle finger and just fuck it all? Sounds good."
