As mother and daughter slowly made their way down the upstairs hall, they began a little chat.
"How was school, sweetie?" The mother said, drying her daughter's tears with her sleeve.
"Fine, mom," the daughter said, playfully swatting her mother's hand from her face with her left hand, seeing as her mother was clutching onto her right arm.
"Mom?"
By the time they reached the steps the mother stopped responding. Her eyes slowly closed and her grip on the daughter's arm slackened before falling off entirely, limply collapsing along with the rest of her down the non-covered, hardwood staircase.
"MOM!!!!"
Her head hit the steps three times before reaching the bottom.
The daughter couldn't even move as she watched her mother fall. She couldn't even make a noise.
Only a few seconds after her mother hit the floor with thud did the daughter snap out of her petrification. She bolted down the steps toward her mother as a pool of blood began to accumulate around her head.
As she cradled her mother's head against her now blood-soaked breast, the girl let out a deafening scream. It was so sad, so angry, so worried, so terrifying a scream. Then she cried. She cried because for the first time ever the 16 year old felt like she was truly alone.
