I sat shivering on the swing set and blew hot air into my hands. It was mid October, and it seemed not even my leather jacket could protect me from the banal weather. The leaves on the ground had started to wilt as if winter was trying to make an entrance.
I looked at the tiny box filled with sand and smiled. I remember the day perfectly; the day I met Dallon, that is. It was at this very park, Sunset Park. It was 9 years ago; I remember being alone, I had no friends when I was younger. I had tried to play with my classmates who had a game of tag going on, but they shunned me. They would say I was "it" and run and hide from me, and play their own game behind the tree. So, silently crying, I had walked to the sandbox and tried to make a sandcastle a little less worthless than I thought I was.
Then, the strangest thing happened. I felt eyes on the back of my neck this entire time, but then I heard someone get off the swings, and come over to the sandbox. I looked up into those beautiful eyes of his, and saw his messy hair when he extended his hand and simply said, "Dallon. What is your name?"
I blinked a few times to make sure I wasn't going crazy, but then hesitantly, I reached out my hand and grabbed his and said, "Brendon."
And that was the end of our conversation, He then got into the sandbox, sat down and began helping me build my sandcastle. I had tears welling up and spilling over onto my already stained cheeks as we built the fucking greatest sandcastle I remember. When we were finished, he just walked away. I was going to chase after him, but I was scared I'd ruin the only friendship I had ever had. I was nervous I would never see him, but the next day, he came back, same time and place. And he did everyday after that. It was as if we had an unspoken understanding that we'd be there everyday, ready to build sandcastles.
About a month after our initial meeting, I was about to head out to the sandbox when my mother told me I had to eat first. I tried making excuses but they all sounded ridiculous so I finally just told her about Dallon. I have never seen my mom so happy in her entire life. She made two PB&J sandwiches and told me to have him come over.
At that point, I bolted to the park. I saw him walking towards the sandbox and almost yelped in anticipation, and ran towards him at full speed. I guess I misjudged when to stop in excitement because I basically tackled him to the ground and straddled him.
"DALLON I WANT YOU TO COME OVER AND EAT PB&JS WITH ME," I basically yelled.
He just smiled, lifted me off of him, stood up and took me by the hand as we walked to my house.
I breathed in some air and realized that I had been daydreaming this entire time. I wasn't the 8 year old boy smiling and holding Dallon's hand anymore. I was the 17 year old kid who was almost late to school, but didn't even care. It had been raining, but I didn't feel wet. I looked up to see a black umbrella, carried by my one and only best friend, Dallon Weekes.
