Moonlight shone in the room through a slight part in the curtains that covered up my huge window, illuminating the room with it’s pale light. I was sitting on my bed, my chin resting on my knees, unable to sleep. Reaching my hand over to my night stand, I grabbed my sketchbook and flipped the small lamp on. Golden light now washed over the room, extinguishing the shadows that clung to the walls at night. I felt a little safer now. Feeling safe was a luxury many of us couldn’t afford anymore. Pushing my thoughts away, I flipped open the sketchpad to a new page. I was about to bring my pencil down on the paper, when a sharp crashing noise sounded from somewhere in the house. My head snapped up. That’s weird… I thought. No one is home. Forgetting about the sketchpad, I scrambled off my bed and ran to the door.
Crash!
This time the sound was louder. It was soon followed by a few voices. Pressing my ear up against the door, I strained to listen, but the voices were too quiet to comprehend. My heart had begun to race. “No, no no no, this can’t be happening…” I muttered to myself as I began to pace frantically. They had found me. I knew it was them, they had found me and they were going to take me away. I tried desperately to think of some sort of escape, but my mind came up blank. Panic began to settle in as the noises and voices came closer.
“Remember, don’t shoot. We need her alive.” A voice said. It was slightly muffled, probably from the helmets they wore. They were close, it sounded like they were just down the hall. My heart was beating faster and faster as footsteps echoed around the hall. I stepped away from the door quietly, not wanting them to hear where I was. I needed to buy time, if only they would check the other rooms first-
Squeak!
I cringed as a loose board groaned under my weight. This was it, there was no escape now for sure. Silence seemed to drag on for hours. All I could hear was my gasping breaths and pounding heart. Suddenly my door crashed in, and at least ten armed people in government soldier uniforms pooled around the entry. They were covered from head to toe in shiny, silvery metallic armour, each with their own large and dangerous looking gun.
“There’s no escape. Give up, rebel.” a man’s voice called. My mind reeled, trying to think of another option. Anything would be better than letting them take me. At least no one else was here, they wouldn’t have to face the same fate as me.
“Get her.” the same man said. Two armored people marched towards me. Suddenly, an idea hit me.
“I won’t let you take me!” I yelled as I spun around and sprinted across the room. Chaos erupted immediately as they desperately tried to catch me. Without a second thought, I leaped on my bed, raised my arms to cover my head, and crashed through my large window. I felt glass scrape my body all over, cutting my skin like hundreds of tiny razor sharp needles. I squeezed my eyes shut, trying not to think about the twelve-story fall. My mind completely shut down as I was falling, falling, falling…
