“So, the plan.” Ethan started. “What should we do first? Rescue the prisoners or take everyone down?”
We had been planning to infiltrate the government for a while now. Today was the day it was going to happen. Today, everything would end, and I would fix this once and for all. Firstly, we had to work out the whole plan.
“I think it should work out something like this…” I announced as I began drawing plans on a large paper.
~~~
Cold wind nipped at my face. I shrunk a little deeper into my large coat, trying my best to stay warm. It was a cold winter night, but the wait outside in the cold was worth it. Me and Ethan, the leaders of the Resistance, had managed to gather as many people as we could to fight in our final showdown. About thirty people were gathered around me and Ethan, waiting for orders. It seemed like impossible odds against the huge size of the government. Today we would bring the massacre to an end, and restore peace to the country. It was the only option for our survival. Anticipation washed over me, making me almost forget about the cold. Underneath the excitement though, a sense of fear dragged at my body, making me feel small and vulnerable. What if our plan didn’t work? What if I was leading all of us to certain death?
“Remember the plan.” Ethan’s voice shook me out of my thoughts. “We need everyone to fight their best if we are going to win this fight. Alright?” he called.
A chorus of cheers rose up from the small crowd, creating a huge cloud of mist as their breath mingled together.
“Let’s do this!” a man called.
“We can win!” another hollered.
“We’re better than them, we’ll show ‘em!”
Their words filled me up with confidence. Maybe we could do this. Maybe we really could win, and end this time of nonsense. I couldn’t help but smile, despite whatever was ahead.
“We can do this, if we all work together!” My voice rose above the cheers of the others. I really hoped that tonight’s events would turn out as well as we all thought they would.
We all snuck into the government building in pairs with fifteen minute increments in between. Our plan was to infiltrate the building without them knowing, and once we were all there, free the prisoners that would be used for testing. All we had to do was pass by everyone, unnoticed that we don’t belong. It seemed small enough, but even thinking about it sent my heart racing.
One pair gone. Two pairs gone. Three. Four. Time seemed to drag on, the minutes turned to hours. Finally, three of us were left. An odd number. Ethan had left first, and I was going to leave last.
“You can go ahead.” I breathed to the other two. “Good luck.”
“You too.” one replied, giving me a curt nod as they walked inside.
I tugged at my uniform uncomfortably. We had managed to get a few boxfuls of the government uniforms from our spies, a vital asset to this plan. Without the uniforms, they’d notice us right away. The thought of having to go alone made me extremely nervous. I needed to make sure I didn’t get caught, I just had to. Without me, our group would be down a leader, and Ethan would have to do everything alone.
“Stop it.” I murmured to myself as I took in a deep, calming breath. “I’ll be fine.”
Eventually I glanced at my watch. Nineteen minutes had passed. Oops. So much for paying attention. I shrugged to myself, took another deep breath, and walked inside the building.
