Albert's phone rang in his pocket. He pulled it out when he stepped out of his truck. He looked at the screen. It was Beverly. Albert slid his finger sideways across the screen a couple of times and then put the phone to his ear.
"I haven't even made it in the house yet, are you serious." he said jokingly.
There was no friendly hello or a sarcastic response on the other end of the line. Albert heard crashes and bangs and male voices yelling. He stood there, listening. He looked at the phone screen again. It was definitely Beverly's number.
He put the phone back up to his ear. He listened carefully to the voices trying to make out what they were saying. From the sound of it Beverly had pocket dialed him. He was going to hang up but his gut told him to stay on the line.
He kept the phone to his ear as he unlocked the front door and stepped inside. He didn't want to jump in his truck and head back to the gallery in a panic if she was just having a couple of guys come in and move things around. He waited for something to tell him that wasn't what this was.
He put the phone on speaker and set it down on the table beside the recliner and sat down. He leaned back and tried to close his eyes for a few minutes. His head was starting to pound and he just wanted to rest a few minutes.
He bolted upright in the chair suddenly when he heard a female scream through the phone. His line was still connected and he was listening as Beverly screamed something over and over again between bangs and clangs. He picked up the phone, turned it off speaker, and listened carefully. 'She said we'll know' blew through his mind.
Suddenly, he heard Beverly's voice, at a distance and moving away from the phone. All he could make out from her yell was "taking me" and "sacrifice".
Albert hung up his phone and dropped his phone in his pocket. He grabbed his little bat from beside the recliner and his keys off the table by the door as he headed out. He jumped into his truck and drove as fast as he could back to the mine.
