As I walked down the ally on my way to school I couldn't help but wonder where all those families went. More importantly where they went after meeting with the government. My best friend James had just got his job assignment when his whole family went to the dinner and never returned. Would my family disappear? Would we go crazy and kill each other or ourselves? I had never met anyone from the government. The highest ranking people any of us had ever met was well my father. He was our cities elected officer. He is supposed to keep a watchful eye on everyone and make sure that we all followed the rules.
There is a room in our house with cameras of the whole city. The streets were filled with them. Everyone's house was filled with them. The only place without cameras is this ally. They tell us that keeping secrets is bad and so we must be watched. My father hates the camera room but it's his job to watch them. Sometimes if I listen close enough I can hear the buzz of all the cameras. It's almost impossible but I know they're here. They ally is the only place where there is no buzzing.
I drag my hand behind me against the stone building. I notice other students, a new student walking out of the building. We never usually get new students. It's even more rare for a male student to just appear. I dart my eyes to the ground. It was bad form to stare at people. It made them sad and angry. It started wars for people to be angry. If they wanted to talk they would approach us. We were all ranked. Students wore uniforms, new ones completely white. It showed purity and form. Older students wore black and white for maturity. Adults also had uniforms but they were dependent upon which placement they got, it is also always changing due to shortages in the materials.
I continue to walk with my eyes on the ground until I reach the school. Every so often I glance behind me to look at the new boy. He is tall, thin, and doesn't walk quite straight. He walks as if there is something in front of him like he's scared to fall over it. Once I reach the school I straighten my posture. My eyes set straight ahead, never looking at anyone but always looking forward. Bad posture and darting eyes are considered rude. I get in line to walk in the school. The doors don't open until everyone is here and in a uniform line. We are a team of solo people they remind us. We must stick by ourselves but we are punished as a group. If some students don't show up we all stay outside until they do, even if it means all night. It's supposed to teach us the importance of attendance.
The line starts moving forward. I notice officers checking everyone in, it was an unusual occurrence and only ever happened on the first day of school when we get vaccinated. Some of my classmates notice the officers and start to whisper. The line starts to pick up speed as the officers start taking students out of the line and shoving them through a door. The people in front of me start to panic. Normally the buzzing is soft and bearly noticeable but something different. The buzzing is loud and getting louder as I get closer to the school. My hands are damp with sweat and my vision is blurring.
I glance behind me, I notice the new kid darting his head around in panic. My heart starts racing. More officers pour out of the school and start shooting the students who step out of line. Everything around me starts to spin and my face is burning. I can't stand here, I need to move but my feet won't work. The new boy steps out of line with his hand in front of him like he's trying to feel for something. I try to scream for him to stop but my throat is dry and my mouth won't move. Then, I notice his eyes, they are foggy. It all makes sense he can't see. Thats why he walks weird. He's blind. Everyone had to learn it in biology but we were told it was eradicated over 50 years ago.
One of the officers yell, "another on is out of line," and points a gun to the boys head.
I don't even think, he's innocent, they can't kill him. My body jolts out of line, "stop." I throw my hands in front of the gun.
