LA MAGIE

My breathing is heavy. I open my eyes and notice that they didn't shoot me. More importantly, they aren't moving almost as if time froze. Nervous I dart around, everyone is frozen, everyone but the blind boy. I continue to look around to see if anyone is moving, I try to listen for the buzz of technology but there isn't one.

"What's going on," the boy whispers.

Concerned I stutter, "I-uh-um, we need to go." I grab his hand and start running down the ally. I don't know why everyone just froze. All I know is we can't be around when others come to help. Never in my life have I seen a crowd freeze like that. It was surreal almost fantasy. As we're running down the ally I can hear the buzz again.

"Who are you," he manages between breaths, "where are we going?"

"Do you hear that?"

"Hear what?"

"The buzzing, do you hear the buzzing?"

"Are you crazy? There is no buzzing!"

Suddenly an officer starts running down the ally, "We need to hide now!" I exclaim pulling him behind a wall. Our bodies pressed together. I notice his eyes are grey, with scars surrounding the lids. His face was handsome but I could tell he has been through something. His forehead creased from stress, his lips dry and thin. I want to ask him more about his eyes but I know that we should hide first.

"We need to hide now. All of the people froze except you and me and if they find us they will either kill us or have us placed in combat camp. Where can we hide?" I whisper.

"In my house," he starts to feel the stone, "we are close."

"I know where it is. Take my hand we will move faster." I push him away and grab his hand. "I saw you leave your house earlier on your way to the school." I check past the wall and begin to run to his door. I hear the blood pounding in my ears. Saving this boy not only set my on a path that will kill me but, my family will be punished as well. I had always followed the rules, in a perfect world we aren't even supposed to know how to break the rules. No free will was how they wanted it, no war if we are mindless zombies. As we approach his door it swings open and a middle-aged lady pulls us in.

"Vohn what are you doing here," she scolds, "fit in is all I told you to do. We need this, you know how hard it was to keep them from killing you."

"Ma'am," I intrude, "it's not his fault. Guards were taking kids out of line and killing them. He couldn't see and I-I did something." I look at my hands. I can't explain that I stopped a crowd with my hands, that they froze in their tracks. Nobody is like me and that will get people killed and hurt. My throat gathers a lump and my legs wobble.

"La magie!" The woman exclaims pulling me away from the front of the house down a set of stairs.

________AUTHORS NOTE___________

I have just moved and don't have any internet. I am at the library right now and quickly finished this chapter. Nobody gave me insight into what the boys' name should be so my mom came up with Vohn. Anyway, I will update the book when I can.

PS: La magie is French.
