The theater was dark now.
Only the green glow of the exit signs and a dim bulb in the wings gave off any light.

As eighteen-year-old Melissa Williams  crossed the stage towards the exit, she suddenly stopped. Center stage now, she turned and faced the empty seats.

In her mind's eye, Melissa saw the audience that had been there earlier that night. Their eyes focused on the stage. Their lips curved into smiles. Eager. Expectant. Ready to be Entertained.

She heard laughter again. The hush during a quiet scene. The applause. Wave after wave of it, like a thundering waterfall.

Melissa couldn't resist. Imagining the applause and the cheers, she took a bow. Blew a couple of kisses and bowed again. As she straightened up, grinning at herself, a bright hot glare hit her in the eyes.

Shading her eyes, Melissa peered up at the catwalk, a narrow metal walkway suspended from the auditorium ceiling. All she could make out was the outline of a figure, crouched low behind one of the lights.

"Okay, you caught me," She called out, laughing. "Go ahead, make fun. Tell the director how I was pretending to be the star, I don't care."

No answer.

Melissa shrugged and started to leave. The spotlight followed her movement. She stopped, peering up at the light.

"Okay, who is that?" She called.

Still no answer.

"Come on, who is it?" Melissa demanded. "Is this some kind of joke?"

Melissa's scalp prickled. Tightening her grip on her dance bag, she began walking offstage.

Again, the spotlight followed her.

"This is a weird game you're playing, whoever you are!" Melissa shouted, picking up her pace. She was almost offstage when she heard the catwalk creak. Nervously, she looked up.

The crouched figure was standing now. Melissa saw a flash of skin. And then something was sailing through the air, coming directly at her. Before Melissa could move, it landed in the pool of light at her feet.

A single red rose.

A card tied to the stem with white satin ribbon.

A message that said, soon you'll be mine, Melissa.
