"No wonder you didn't want to come to the movies with me, Melissa," Toni said teasingly. "You had something much more exciting to do."
"I didn't know it was going to happen," Melissa protested with a laugh. She'd met up with Toni after leaving Elvis, and now the two of them were heading back to the motel.
"But you're right, having lunch with Elvis was definitely more exciting than seeing a movie."
Toni suddenly frowned. "I take it you've forgotten what steph said about him."
"I haven't forgotten," Melissa said thoughtfully. "But I don't intend to let something steph said scare me off. Would you?"
"Probably not right away," Toni admitted. "But I'd be careful."
"Lighten up, Toni!" Melissa gave her a playful shove. "You're just so serious sometimes. Besides, all I did was have lunch with him."
"You mean things didn't get hot and heavy over sandwiches and cokes?" She asked.
"No." As they turned towards the motel, Melissa grinned. They got warm, though."
In the motel room, they found steph taking a nap on one of the beds. An envelope and three phone messages for Melissa were on the dresser.
All three phone calls were from jimmy. Will call back, they said.
Melissa wadded them up and tossed them into the Wastepaper basket. Your wasting your time, jimmy, she thought.
While Toni took a shower Melissa tiptoed around, gathering a bundle of dirty clothes for the launderette, when she was done she stretched out on her bed and opened the envelope.
As she read the typewritten letter, her heart began to pound. Not with pleasure, the way it had with Elvis, but with terror.
I dreamed about you last night, Melissa. You were dancing, the way you were when I first saw you. As I stood and watched you, I felt this incredible urge to touch you. So I held out my hands.
You know what happened, Melissa? You came running to me! You jumped into my arms and kissed me. Your hair smelled like flowers and your skin felt like silk.
It was the best dream I ever had.
And some day soon, I'll make it come true. I know it's too soon for you to be dreaming of me. But you will, Melissa. You will.
A fan.P.S. you shouldn't have thrown the roses away! How do you think that made me feel? Furious, Melissa. So Furious, I almost forgot how much I love you!
Hope you enjoyed this chapter! And thanks for reading! Xoxo
