Jimmy, Melissa thought with a shudder. Jimmy white.

Her ex boyfriend.

An image of him appeared in her mind.  His face dark with anger. His eyes glowing like coals. "You'll be sorry about this, Melissa," he'd said.
"You'll wish you'd never taken this lousy job." It was the last time they'd seen each other before Melissa left on tour.

Melissa remembered the figure in the empty theater again. She could see jimmy sneaking inside, spotting her staying late. Climbing up to the catwalk amd scaring her with that light. That rose and it's card. Sweet, then nasty - that was definitely Jimmy's style.

And so was this drawing.

Furious and disgusted, Melissa wadded the drawing and the envelope into a ball and tossed them into the trash can. Then she headed for the dressing room.

She'd handled jimmy before. If he was around now, she'd be ready for him.

"Finally!" Toni Reilly cried, as she entered the steamy, crowded dressing room. Another dancer and roommate of Melissa's, she was a bubbly, gray-eyed redhead with a breathy speaking voice that surprised everybody when she belted out a song.

"You made a big hit with somebody, Melissa. Look!"

Melissa's eyes snapped to the dressing room table - a long counter cluttered with tubes and jars of makeup, boxes of tissues, cups of water, and stray pieces of clothing.

At her own space was a bouquet of roses, their red blooms poking out from flimsy green tissue paper.

Roses. Not just one this time. A whole bouquet.

"So go on, Melissa!" Toni urged excitedly. "Tell us who they're from."

"Yeah," Steph thompson said, her face smeared with thick white cold cream. "I won't be able to sleep unless I find out."

"Jealous, steph?" Toni asked, brushing out her wavy red hair.

"Oh, insanely," Stephanie said. As she tore a handful of tissues from a box amd started wiping her face. "I'm definitely insanely jealous."

Ignoring her, Melissa dug into the green paper and pulled out a small white envelope. The card inside said simply, soon, Melissa.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Toni asked. " You don't look exactly thrilled."

"I'm not," Melissa said, handing her the card. "I love roses, but this is really kind of weird."

"And I have a pretty good idea who's doing this."

"Who?" Toni asked, anxiously.

"Jimmy white. My ex boyfriend." Melissa dipped her fingers into a large jar of cold cream. "I've heard from him already, as a matter of fact."

As she described the drawing of the chopped-off leg, Toni's eyes widened. "Why would he send you something so disgusting and then give you roses?"

"Jimmy's like that," Melissa explained with a sigh. "Really nice one day and totally horrible the next."

"Sounds like he enjoys playing mind games," Steph said, brushing out her hair.

You ought to know, Melissa thought. Mind games were one of steph's specialties. As Melissa cleaned her face and brushed her hair, her gaze kept falling on the roses. Their scent was overpowering in the steamy dressing room.
Sweet.
Almost sickening.
Soon you'll be mine.
Soon.
It felt more like a warning than a promise.
