The rays of the sun beat down on the yard. The summer's harsh heat had deprived every living plant from water. With the heat came a sour, tainted stench that rose from the heaps of trash that were scattered across the junk yard.
Dark multi-hued fur slowly moved between the garbage that dotted the junkyard. Zuma's pink tongue lolled out the side of her jaws as she trudged across the heaps of discarded human products. Her black nose wrinkled in disgust as the sharp horrible stench swamped her.
The german shepherd gagged and coughed before picking up her pace into a lope. She reached the otherside of the yard, panting and her fur heated from the sun. Her ears swiveled back and pinned to her head,"If only I had been destroyed while still in the shelter." She grumbled miserably to herself.
A few hours had passed since she had laid down to rest and escape the heat for a bit. Zuma's eyes fluttered open as she heard the familiar screeching of tires skidding on the asphalt. Hauling her small frame off the dusty ground, she stretched her limbs and trotted over to the chain link fence that surrounded the whole yard.
Tension rippled through her muscles as her fur stood on end in alarm. She narrowed her eyes and leaped back from the fence as the chains rattled from the force of the large mechanical contraption reversing into it. Zuma's ears fell back on her head in fear,"They never come back at this time.. And never so quickly." She whispered to herself and tried to keep her voice from quivering.
Car doors opened and slammed shut with a bang. Humans scurried across the yard to the small house and down the stairwell that led underground. Zuma took a small, cautious step forward and tilted her head slightly. She sat back on her haunches and watched as the last human slipped under the cover of the metal doors, and with a bang they were gone beneath the ground. It was only minutes more before a strong force took the whole earth in its grip and shook it. The shepherd's jaws parted to let out a bark of alarm, but before she could emit the sound of fear she had fallen hard onto the ground with a thud. She gasped for air to seep into her lungs but the air was knocked out of her by the force of her fall. Her chest ached with pain but she forced herself onto shaky limbs.
Zuma stumbled across the yard until she reached the chain fence. She steadied her eyes on where the car had hit, examining to try and find somewhere to force herself through. She bared her teeth and growled in frustration, not able to find a torn part of the fence.
Finally, her hazel gaze landed on the bottom links. The earth was torn up beneath and had released the chains from its hold. Hope sparked in her pelt,'Now to get through." She murmured before pushing all her weight against the chain link fence.
Clenching her teeth as she use all her strength left to try and force herself through the fence, she slipped on the grass and fell. No use. Zuma knew she wouldn't be able to get through the fence by breaking it, she would have to go under.
Claws tore at the dirt and grass beneath, loosening the fence more. The german shepherd ignored the feeling of the dirt building beneath her claws, she had one thing on her mind and that was to escape.
She came to a stop as her muscles ached, paws and fur caked with dirt and mud. The dog lowered herself to the ground and turned to her side, pushing her head beneath the fence and to the other side. Her cautious gaze flicked from side to side. Zuma planted her back paws and pushed, thrusting the front half of her small body to the other side.
Zuma turned herself around so she could pull herself the rest of the way out with her front paws. She gritted her teeth in pain and snarled as the chain tore at her pelt, refusing to let her go. The shepherd kicked at the dirt and tumbled out on the other side. Scarlet liquid seeped from the scratches in her skin.
The shepherd had been running the streets for a bit, reaching the town. Zuma halted suddenly as she heard the desperate barks and howls of more canines. Her gaze shifted slightly and focused on a group of caged dogs. A slight frown twisted on her muzzle.
She padded quietly along the rows of dogs. Taking in their many scents. A german shepherd, slightly taller than her sat at the back of one of the many kennels. Zuma locked eyes with the dog as he turned his head. She quickly turned and trotted off to another set of kennels. She halted in front of a kennel where a large german shepherd sat behind the chain door. His muzzle and head was covered in a larger black mask then the other shepherd.
Her ears swiveled and pointed towards him as he parted his jaws to speak. She listened intently,"Get me out of here and we can help everyone escape. If not, we'll all die here." He muttered and narrowed his dark eyes slightly. Zuma nodded. The kennels were easy to open from the outside, not so easy from the inside.
Quickly, the female released the other shepherd from his kennel. The two parted, they would be able to release more dogs if they split up and they had no time to exchange names.
