I STUMBLED BACK INTO MY house at around 6:50 and shuffled into the kitchen. "Hey Josie, where were you?" Dad asks. I shift my weight awkwardly, trying to find a quick, believable excuse. "I just got back from a booty call" wouldn't quite cut it for my Dad. He'd pull out his shot gun in less than five seconds.
"I was on the Rez," I answer simply, turning around to flash him a smile.
"You've been spending a lot of time there recently, haven't you," he teases. I can't help but shrug.
"Good people there," I answer simply. "And anyways, Jake and Billy are helping me fix up a car."
"Yeah," Dad chuckles. "Yeah, I was talking to Billy about that earlier today. He also told me about your lovely little alarm clock this morning." At that, I couldn't help but let out a discontented grumble.
"Anything else particularly interesting?" I ask, curious to see what strange conversation my father and Billy had stumbled upon today. The two of them were always the most amusing pair, coming up the strangest and most elaborate concepts and conversations. They spoke their own language when they were together; it was a true, harmonious friendship. What they had was something that you couldn't help but want. They were truly lucky to have found one another.
"W-Well," Dad stutters. "Y-You can say no, but I was talking to Billy about how you and Bells haven't been getting along too well."
"Okay?" I question.
"A-And, he offered, you know, only if you want to, to, uh, stay with him and Jake on the Res for the summer." I shrug, not put off by the idea.
"Yeah, sure," I agree.
"Wait." My Dad stops me, holding his hand out. "That's it?"
"What do you mean?" I laugh.
"I thought you'd have at least a little bit of anger over it. Blame Bella for some shit, yell a little, you know, the usual stuff."
"I mean, I can if you want me to," I respond, sending my dad a wink. "I don't know, I think it could be good for us. Plus, I'm done with Bella rifling through my shit."
"I'm sorry, your sister did what?"
"She was in my room fucking everything up this morning," I answer easily. "Couldn't tell you why. I scared the living shit outta her before I could get many answers." My dad let out a heaving breath and put his head into his hands.
"You two really need to figure out how to solve whatever issues are going on."
"Maybe," I shrug, grabbing an apple from the fruit bowl. "But for now I'll settle with living with Billy and Jake, and making her life a living hell will only be a part time job, as opposed to a full-time one."
"Josie," my dad gruns, rubbing his forehead and looking to me tiredly. I couldn't tell if it was jokingly or sincere, though I could only hope he was joking around.
