Hey guys, as this book gets more reads, I'm seeing a lot of comments about how Josephine acts in the first few chapters, specifically towards Bella, and what she says to her father. So I just wanted to give a deeper explanation for all of it, because in the summary I describe her as a very loving, sweet girl.
1. Josephine is a really loyal person, and everyone that she is loyal to, she trusts deeply. That was a character trait that she has always had. BUT, when you abuse that loyalty and trust, she lashes out. This is because of her parent's divorce, and her strained relationship with Isabella. The divorce itself, while it was hard on Josephine, wasn't the worst part. Even when she was young, her mother preferred Bella while she was more of a Daddy's girl, so it was no surprise that her mother wanted custody of Bella over her. But she and Bella were very close during early childhood, and Bella was someone that Josephine relied on. Josephine and Bella were supposed to switch off visiting between Forks and Pheonix, but Bella stopped coming to Forks. Josephine continued to try to keep their relationship and visit Bella and her mother in Pheonix, but they essentially ignored her when she came and kept to their regular routine. So Josephine has some pretty bad abandonment issues when it comes to her sister and her mother, and she has lost all trust when it comes to them. She fears caring for them and letting them back into her life, because she knows that they will ultimately abandon her again. So, she uses her anger to protect her form caring about Bella. For her, all of this resentment is a form of self-preservation. She purposefully tries to find ways to be annoyed or angry with Bella so she doesn't let her sister back in.
2. Charlie and Josephine's relationship is something that I love about the book. They're brutally honest with each other because they love one another too much to lie. They cuss at each other, but it's never in a way that's meant to be rude, it's just part of their vernacular. Charlie is a very good father to her, but Josephine is also good for Charlie because she forces him out of his shell and enables him to be more extroverted. They're a father and daughter, but they're also best friends. So they don't have much of a filter.
Okay! That's it, I hope it clears up a few of Josephine's actions and statements. And I mean, after all, she's only 16 at the start of the book. I don't know about y'all, but when I was 16 I wasn't the most rational person in the world. Sometimes I spoke and acted before I thought.
PS. This isn't meant to be anything other than a little more insight into how Josephine's mind works. I just wanted to clear up some of the reasoning behind why I had Josephine act certain ways and say certain things.

Learn as much as you can about the concentration camps in China right now. I may not be Muslim, but I'm Jewish, and one of my best friends is Muslim. My grandparents were survivors of the Holocaust, and I will be damned if it happens again without me making a stand. These camps have been active since 2018, and millions of Muslims have been suffering for far too long. The things these people are forced to do simply because of their religion is unspeakable, and I will not stand for it. I've linked some petitions below, so please sign them if you have the time.
