The group was shocked and terrified by the name that the scholar murmured.

"Impossible!" the captain exclaimed with a fierce look in his eyes. "Those creatures are rumored to be extinct, no one has ever seen them after the purging of the White Light." he spoke in a rushing tone.

"I can only hope that what you say is true, captain" as the scholar stood up and looked at the horizon. "For those monsters don't feel remorse for murdering the living" as he sighed and looked worried on their behalf.

The soldiers all started to whisper among themselves, starting to fear what they don't truly understand, an enemy they had not yet seen.

"What good are these weapons of ours then against these creatures?" said the one of the scouts.

"Aren't they rumored to vanish and appear out of nowhere?" said another.

"I read about them in the archives before, they we're said to be strong as a bear and fast a pouncing lion" said the shivering soldier at the side.

The captain stood up and slammed the tip of his lance unto the ground.

"Tgsshkk" as his spear lit with crackling white light.

"Men, have you forgotten who are? Even if these stories be true, aren't we prepared to slay these beasts? We have been trained by mighty generals and and have been taught holy magic by the Ilitheria's Paladins themselves, so what have you to fear?" said the captain to silence the mass hysteria that was caused by a theory of truth.

The men began to calm down and others started to kneel and pray, fear about the unknown was something that  they weren't used to, especially stories that could possibly be true.

"Domine Fortinante Excelsis" spoke the scholar as he began to make hand signs and started moving his hands in a circular motion. "Fortinante Domina, Esterys Stelum!" as he slammed the ground, shooting golden-white leylines that made dome around them. "A ward of protection for anything that ambush us" said the scholar, as he sat down and laid his back on his sleeping horse.

The captain gestured his men to take a rest, while others are still whispering and praying.

"Vampires huh?" said the captain as he also sat down and laid his back on his mount. "It's been almost a century since that incident happened" as he murmured to himself, while he fell asleep.

- 3:47 AM -

Some of the men were getting uneasy sleep, some haven't even slept at all. One scout took a leak and went out of the barrier as he greeted the scouts on the lookout points.

"Hey, how's it going? Want to switch? I can't really sleep well" as he walk towards the sitting guard. As he got closer the guard didn't respond to his call so he went closer. "Huh, he didn't hear me, must be sleepy" as he got closer to the guard and shook his shoulders.

"Hey, you hear me?" as he grabbed his comrade's should and turned him around.

"Graaaahhh!" he screamed in horror as he fell backwards. His comrade's eyes were gouged out, and his neck was dripping of his own blood as if something sipped from it. "What the hell?" he exclaimed as he crawled backwards until  he bumped into something.

"By Lord Almighty!" he shouted as he saw two corpses of the other lookouts side by side, headless.

His screams woke up everyone, and as they woke, red eyes from the darkest's pitch of the night started glowing around them.

"Oh Lord..." said the scholar as he started to scan his eyes on what was surrounding them.

"Captain! The lookouts are dead Captain!" as he got up and started running towards the circle of protection.
