It’s common knowledge that girls and boys can’t be best friends without feeling something more towards each other. That it’s impossible to be that close to the opposite sex without feeling an attraction or some kind of lust. Wrong. That’s the biggest piece of bull shit I have heard in my life. I know this because I have been best friends with a guy for seven years and we never have and never will feel an attraction.

The boys name is Justin and we met at school. I was the new girl and he was my only true friend for the first few days. It started when we became science partners on my first day. We got along great in the lesson and he offered to show me around the school until I got used to the layout. He was so sweet and introduced me to all of his friends, I had no idea he was the ‘popular’ kind. On my first day, Justin walked me to all my lessons and he walked me home. We found out we lived really close and decided we wanted to be friends. Now, it’s our daily routine to walk to and from school together. He could get the bus and be with all his friends but he would rather be with me for some reason I don’t know. Justin took me in from the beginning and we have been inseparable ever since.

My name is Sophia. I transferred to Justin’s school all the way from England when I was ten because my mum got a job out here. Money was tight and she just couldn’t turn down an amazing opportunity. There’s just me and my mum in this family. We’re not rich but we’re not poor. We get by and that makes us happy. I always wanted siblings when I was younger but know that I’m older, I appreciate having my mum to myself. I have a Dad, somewhere. I have never met him and I don’t care to meet him. He left my mum as soon as she got pregnant, so in my opinion he isn’t worth my time. That’s all there is to me really. I’m just an average teenage girl. Life here in Canada is so much better, I don’t regret anything and I love my life.

Our friendship is the best one I have had in my life so far. He is always there for me when I need to talk, rant or laugh with him and sometimes even to cry on his shoulder. Most importantly, he is someone to goof around with, whilst remaining comfortable in my own skin. Our families understand that we will never be more than friends and therefore allow us to hang out all the time and have sleepovers. It’s good to see a boy’s perspective on life as well as my own and we have helped each other overcome so many problems in our lives. We literally become depressed if we don’t see each other every week, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
