Caridad waited until Cristal was asleep to leave. She was dressed in a bright orange sweatsuit and black Jordan's. She took her car keys out of her dresser and slipped out the window. After successfully shutting the window quietly, Cari made her way to the garage where she slowly lifted the door to reveal her car. It was a bright orange 1999 Dodge Challenger. She had inherited the car from her father and it was the most important thing that she owned besides the store. After finally receiving the new car part in the mail that she desperately needed, she fixed her vehicle. But why was a grown ass woman sneaking out of her own house, you ask?
Well, after Oscar left and Caridad's dad passed away, Cari had gotten into street racing. At first, she had started because Amada was struggling to keep the store open by herself and they needed the money. She would use some of the money to pay towards bills and then slip the rest in the cash register so that her mom wouldn't know. But after the now family of two got back on their feet, Cari kept racing. She was good. Like really good. Like Fast and Furious good. The buy-in for the race was $1,000 and required four drivers so she went home with a bit less than $4,000 including the $1K she started with. It was just a sign of respect for the winner to pay the organizer a fraction of their winnings. Once Cari got to college, Cristal had convinced her to stop racing. And that she did.
She stopped racing. But that didn't mean that she couldn't organize the races. The price of the buy-in rose meaning that Caridad was getting more money. It was too good to pass up. Cristal hated the races because most of them ended with the cops showing up and most people getting arrested. Cari always made it out though. She tried her best to slowly and sneakily turn the car on. Once it was on, she put it in drive and rolled it to the end of the driveway before hopping in it to turn to the right. When the car was on the street, she pressed the gas and pulled off towards downtown, unaware that Spooky was sitting in his car and saw the woman stealthily pull off.
He couldn't sleep so he went to get some fresh air and have a smoke. Oscar laughed as he watched her pull off, shaking his head and flicking the cigarette out the window. He then turned on his own car and went to follow her. Caridad made it downtown, swerving into an empty space between to cars. When she got out, the people cheered. They knew who she was. And no one messed with her. Some had heard that she was claimed by the leader of the Santos gang so tried to keep their distance. It wasn't hard to miss Cari in her bright orange car, matching outfit, and blonde wig. She slapped peoples hands as she walked through the crowd to the start/finish line.
Each of the racers stood by their cars. They would usually match their outfits to their cars. As Cari greeted them, she noticed that only three stood before her. "Where's your fourth at?" Caridad asked. "It was Joaquin but he had to work the graveyard shift" Suki said. Her signature color was pink. "What? The graveyard shift?" She questioned. Joaquin was a regular. He barely ever missed a race. Off to the side, Spooky pulled up. Putting on his sunglasses, he got out of his car and leaned against the side. "Why don't you run with us, Cari?" James, dressed in yellow, asked. "Hell no, man. I don't race anymore. Either you find a fourth or you don't race" Caridad said.
