"Ooouuu girl, you were right. He's definitely out there" Cristal said. Cari's best friend and roommate was currently in the front window of their house with binoculars. You see, they lived down the street from Oscar and Cesar's house. Santiago's was on the corner of the next block, past both houses. There was no way that Cari could get to the store without passing by them, unless she went around the other way which meant she had to walk an extra block or two. She had done her best to avoid Oscar at all costs since he had gotten out.
If she saw him and they got to talking, it wouldn't be long before he busted down her walls. Whenever he was around, she went soft. There was pretty much only three places she went: school, home, and to the store. He knew where she lived since he had the Santos keep tabs on her while he was away. Anytime he dropped by, lucky enough, Cristal was their to cover for Cari and say she wasn't home. Now the store was a different story.
Cari would receive a warning text from Cesar a few minutes before they arrived. That would give her enough time to come up with a bullshit excuse and switch shifts with her mom Amada. She usually waited until the Santos had left or went inside to walk to work, but today she had no time for that. Looking at the clock, she was already ten minutes late. "Yo, I will literally just have to walk the long way then" Cari shrugged, walking around the island in their kitchen.
"Nah, she ain't gotta do all that. I'll take her" Dom said, pulling his eyes away from the tv. Dom, short for Dominic, was Cristal's boyfriend. They had met at the graduation party that was held for Freeridge's Class of 2017 which was the class that the two girls graduated in. Dom was a member of the Prophet's gang. It didn't bother Cari, she was never with the gang shit. It was the reason that she had lost Oscar in the first place. That wasn't any of her business. But everybody in Freeridge knew that Santiago's was a gang neutral zone.
"You sure dawg? I can walk" Caridad said as she laced up her jean patterned Nike SB's. "It's no problem" He said. Dom stood and turned off the tv. "Thanks baby, you're the best" Cristal said, placing a kiss on her man's cheek. "You better remember that for when I get back" Dom slapped her ass as she walked past him. Once Cari's shoes were on, the two went outside and got into Dom's 1968 Chevy Camaro convertible. When she saw the top was down, she was confused because it was almost always up.
"What's up with the top?" She asked, putting in her seatbelt. "That shit broke on my ass the other day. I've been meaning to get it fixed" He explained. Lord, this was just as bad as walking past them. Oscar was still gonna see her. Oh well, she knew it was inevitable. Dom started his car and pulled out of the driveway, making a right. Cari swore it was something about gangsters, they just had to drive slow. They couldn't help but not to. The sound of the motor caused the Santos to look up. They always had to be on guard due to things like drive-by's.
"Yo, ain't that Caridad?" Sad Eyes said to Oscar. Oscar's eyes focused on the dark haired girl sitting in the passenger seat. She was leaning against the door of the car, holding her head up with her right arm. As they rode past, Cari's eyes wondered over to the small tan house. They connected with Oscar's as she slid on her oval shaped sunglasses. Damn, he had gotten even finer since being in jail. It looked like he grew a few inches taller. His arms were bigger and his chest was more built.
He had also developed a little goatee that was definitely working for him. Cari had to look away because she swore if she stared any longer, her mouth and some other things were gonna start watering. "Yeah, that's her" Oscar responded, "Whose that she's with?" Cesar could here the jealousy in his brother's voice. "Dom. The new Prophet leader. He's her roommate's boyfriend" His little brother answered. Why was she in a car with a Prophet? She was out here making him look bad. Everyone knew she was his and she was not to be messed with.
"She must've finally come out of hiding" Oscar flicked his cigarette onto the ground and stood up. He knew she was hiding from him. It was best for him to just wait it out until she basically came to him. Oscar went in the house and slid a crisp white t-shirt over his wife-beater. He tucked a cigarette behind his ear and grabbed the keys to his red car. "Let's go" He said to Cesar. "Let me just go grab my phone really quick" Cesar said. He needed to warn Caridad that he was on the way.
"Nah, you don't need it right now. Let's go" Oscar repeated. Cesar and another Santos named Armando stood and got into the old car. Dom and Cari pulled up to Santiago's just as a lady and her son walked out. "Thanks bro" The two knocked fists before Cari got out of the car. "I got you, little homie" Dom said before pulling off around the corner. Caridad stepped into the store, greeting her mother who sat behind the corner. "Hola Mami" She said, stepping through the clear door that separated the cash register area from the rest of the store.
She kissed her mother on the cheek as a sign of respect. "You're late" Amada said. "Sorry. I got it from here" Cari reassured. Amada nodded, going up the back stairs that led to the small, cramped apartment that the family of three used to live in. After Santiago passed, it was just the two females. Then Caridad moved out when she went to college. Making sure that her mother was gone, Cari hopped up on the counter with her back against the small opening in the bulletproof glass.
She pulled the swisher sweets package that she kept her weed in out of the pocket in her cargo pants and began breaking it for a joint. Someone came in the store, triggering the little bell that hung above the door. Caridad looked up at the m small reflective monitor type thing that was mounted on the corner of the walls. She saw that it was Flaco, a 12 year old girl from around the neighborhood. Flaco picked up some loose pieces of candy that they sold and began walking towards the door, not knowing Cari saw her.
"Flaco, put that candy back with yo stealing ass before I have to call your mother down here again" The little girl dropped the candy on the nearest display and ran out of the store. That'll teach her ass. Just as Caridad started to roll the joint, another person walked in to the store. She didn't bother looking to see who is was, she was too busy licking the joint shut. "I'd recognize that fine ass anywhere. Caridad" A familiar voice said. Her heart dropped when she snapped her head around to see Oscar.
Try and keep your cool she thought to herself. Cari looked at Cesar, sending him a look that sarcastically said thanks a lot. "It's just Cari now. What's up, Spooky" She places her joint on the glass counter next to the register. Oscar's heart ached a little hearing Cari call him by his gang name. He knew she was still mad but that want gonna stop him from trying. Caridad reached into a box and pulled out a carton of cigarettes. She began to stock the shelf behind her.
"That's all I get, bebita? I was expecting more" He flirted. "I don't know why, Oscar" She responded. "Come over here. Let me talk to you for a minute" Oscar said, pointing off to the side at the clear door. Caridad's mind said no but here feet said yes. She found herself walking over to the door and opening it, leaning nonchalantly against the frame. "What do you want?" She asked. "Why are you acting like that?" He asked, furrowing his eyebrows. "You left me for four years, I think I have a right to act however the hell I want to" Caridad responded.
"Listen, Mami. I was your first and I intend to be your last. Everybody knows your mine. I claimed you" Oscar placed a hand on her face she looked away from him. "You've been gone four years. You can't just come back and place a claim on me like you never left" She said, swatting his hand away. "You were mines then and you're still mines now" He stared down at the girl. It was things like this that broke down Cari. His determination and confidence within his words.
"You weren't thinking about me when you went and killed somebody though, were you?" Cari hit back. There was silence within the store among the three. They had honestly forgotten that Cesar was even there. "I served my time. I did what I had to do and I'm back now, princesa" Oscar said. "You must've forgotten, Papi. I'm no princess, I'm a Queen" She said, twisting his chain around her fingers. The metal made a clinking noice as it came in contact with her acrylic nails.
"Alright, mi reina. Then why don't you come over here and give me a kiss?" Oscar hooked his finger around Caridad's cargo pants and pulled her into him. Once their faces were centimeters apart, Oscar lightly grabbed her chin and leaned into kiss her. He kissed her lips ever so slightly leaving her yearning for more. As he pulled away, she thought her legs were gonna buckle beneath her.
"Why don't you come see me later?" He asked, placing his hands in his pocket. "I might" Caridad crossed her arms as if she was not just sprung from one kiss. Oscar smirked, letting out his signature laugh. He pulled Cari's arms apart, taking her right hand in his hand and placing a kiss on her knuckles. Cesar swore Oscar was a complete different person when his ex-girlfriend was around. "Bye, mi amor" He light dropped her hand before placing a hand on Cesar's shoulder and walking out of the store.
