chapter four 04| beast boy
After a couple of rings, I heard the small crackle which indicated that the line had been picked up. "Hello?"
My older brother's voice was the most comforting thing I had heard since I had woken up. Luckily for me, he lived in Ohio and could come and pick me up. "Ryan, something strange has happened."
"Don't be so vague, Celeste, that's only going to freak me out." he paused for a second, taking in a deep breath. "Okay, are you hurt?"
"No, nothing like that. I just woke up about five minutes ago in a puddle in the alleyway of Scooters." I didn't know if he knew where the place was, I was just hoping that he did.
"Scooters in Ohio? Do you remember how you got there?" I'd officially rattled my own brother. I didn't like when he got anxious, when that happened he tended to become too overprotective.
I remember being his only motivation to go to he gym and fighting sessions, after hearing about the kind of pain Theo had inflicted on me, he vowed to always be able to protect me from anything.
"I don't, but I'd feel much better if you came to pick me up. And could you bring me a jumper or something?"
"Yeah, I'm on my way."
When I looked over at the boy again, he was alone with a frown carved into his face. "Are you okay?"
His ears perked up at my raised tone, which he used as an invitation to sit on the red tartan stool next to me. "She was nice."
"Maybe you'll see her again?" I nudged him, trying to cheer him up.
It suddenly dawned on me that the boy had grabbed my hand earlier and I had felt nothing. Had my abilities only been time limited? Was this some sort of sick joke?
"You've got that look on your face, again." he pointed out the creases in my forehead which didn't compliment my own crooked frown.
"Are you here with someone? Your parents?" the adult in me began to worry for the boy. Sure, he looked old enough to go out on his own. But he was paying for things in scrappy change, nervously walking around the place with no particular purpose.
"No, I'm alone." he shook his head, slurping at the drink I had ordered with my phone call. I didn't make anything of his actions, I must've made him feel welcome.
I defeated the inner turmoil in my mind by smiling at the boy, biting my fingers immediately after. "I'm a therapist, I went to college and got my doctorate. I work for a government facility that helps federal agents and any estranged cases willing to pay a lot of money. I have a man following me from the Detroit police department. He hasn't worked there for a year but he showed up at my work a couple of days ago and now I've just woken up in Ohio with no memory of how I got here."
