TULIPS
Ice packed up his books and laptop and headed out of the reading room. On his way out of the building he dialled Mark's number and told him to wait for him wherever he was.
Fortunately Mark was at the parking lot. He was about to go home when Ice called. He stood beside his car waiting. He wondered what Ice wanted this time. He had been talking less to his friend because of how he always reacted. But that did not mean Ice was bad. He just had different ways of seeing things.
In a few minutes, his friend approached him. Mark didn't know if he was happy or scared to see Ice.
"Ice, were you still in the school?" Mark asked defending himself before Ice attacked.
"You sound like you're avoiding me?" Ice retorted. He knew his friend very well. He reads his every move so easily.
"No."
No?
Ice simpered. "I don't believe you."
Mark breathed and looked away.
"You better be careful with that boy friend of yours. They only think of how to blackmail people like us and extort our money."
Mark looked at Ice sternly. He did not know what he was talking about. If it was about Tan, definitely he was wrong. Tan is not what he thinks.
"What? Am I wrong?"
"You are wrong. Tan is not like that. He can't hurt me. I know him well."
Ice burst into a sarcastic laughter. "You really grown up, Mark," Ice touched his plum cheeks playfully. Ice tilted his head to study Mark closely. "How do you know who will hurt you and who will not?"
Oh Mark. You are so naive. The world is a harsh place. You can't play dumb and expect to survive.
"That's not why I called you. Are you coming to the beach?"
"Yes."
"With your car?"
"No. I will join the bus."
The bus?
Ice squinted his eyes and folded his arms across his chest. He studied his friend curiously again and walked closer to his side.
"Who are you cheering for, Mark?"
Mark leaned back towards his car as if he was scared of the question. He looked away again trying to avoid Ice intense gaze.
"Ice, why are you asking me?"
Ice rubbed his friend's shoulders down to his chest. "You are drifting away Mark. I really want to know what that boy is made of," Ice stepped closer and placed his right arm on the car just beside Mark's face.
"Stay away from Tan, Ice."
"Why? You are only making me more curious."
Tan right. So Tanaporn was the boy making his friend's heart flutter. Now Ice wanted more information on the boy. He couldn't wait to get the reports he needed about this Tan boy.
"Is he richer than me, or more handsome than I am?"
He leaned back and adjusted Mark's tie. Mark was quiet.
"Well, can you come to my place and help me pack?"
"Ice...?"
"It's just a request. Are you coming or not?"
"I can't come to your house."
The last time he went to Ice's house, some things happened that he didn't want repeating again.
Mark quickly got into his car.
Ice watched him leave. Then he walked to his own car. When he stepped in, something caught his eye. He looked at the seat beside him and saw a red flowery designed handkerchief laying on the foot mat.
He reached and picked the handkerchief. Was it Earth's stuff? He was the only one who rode with him in the car recently. He must have dropped it.
Ice squeezed his fist and hit the steering of his car. He had been trying so hard to subdue his feelings for Earth for the past weeks and now this.
He brought the handkerchief close to his face and inhaled the scent. It was really Earth's. He took a deep breath. The scent brought back memories. Memories he had been trying so hard to kill.
