Another bottle was thrown to the ground. It shattered into a myriad of glass shards, a few of them cutting the small, defenceless child cowering in the corner. This child was known as (F/N) (L/N), and their parents were alcoholics. Well, their mum was at least. They didn't know it, but their dad was actually having an affair with their mum's old boss, who fired her. This sent their mum into a crazed depression, and she wasted all of the family's money on alcohol and cigarettes.

The poor child had become an empty shell, devoid of any emotions or feelings. They had stopped crying after a year of the abuse. They had stopped feeling. It hurt horribly, but they had become numb to the pain. They hardly ever got to eat, but at one point, they just couldn't be bothered. They didn't care if they starved, even if they were only eleven.

Life was horrible for (F/N), and most days they just wanted to die. That is, until one night they saw red and blue flashing lights outside their window. A spark of hope ignited within them. Maybe this was a good sign!

The front door was knocked down, and before (F/N)'s young mind was able to process the situation, the police had their mother handcuffed and were dragging her into the car that was flashing. (F/N) was picked up by a kind looking police woman. "Don't worry, honey, we'll have this sorted out." She said softly to the child, who simply nodded with a blank expression, one they had been wearing for the past year. Or was it two years? They had lost count.

~~~~~~~~
"I have to warn you, though. That child is like an empty shell. Their mother has broken them. We don't know if it's possible to make them normal again."
"You don't have to worry, Kobayashi-san. I have my ways."
"Well, thank you for taking them in, Hitomiko-san."
"It's my job, no need to thank me."
Two adults walked out of the room. The woman with long dark blue hair took (F/N)'s hand gently and took them out of the large grey building and into a silver car. The sun was covered by clouds, creating a grey and gloomy atmosphere, but that wasn't that unusual for (F/N). Their whole life had been grey and gloomy up to that point.
Hitomiko started the engine and started driving to the orphanage she worked at, Sun Garden. The journey was filled with an uncomfortable silence, while (F/N) stared forwards with their usual dull eyes.
The car pulled into the driveway of Sun Garden, and Hitomiko helped (F/N) out of the car. She took their hand again and walked up to the front door with them.
(F/N) could already hear the chaotic sounds of children from inside. Hitomiko opened the door and pulled (F/N) inside. They were greeted by the sight of many children talking and playing. Well, two of them were arguing, but it must've been a regular thing, since nobody payed any attention to them. A few children noticed (F/N), though. A boy (or was it a girl?) with green hair tied back in a small ponytail walked over, a couple of other kids looking at him (her?).
"Hitomiko-san? Who's this?" (s?)he asked the blue haired woman. Hitomiko nudged (F/N), signalling for them to introduce themselves.
"I'm (F/N) (L/N). It's nice to meet you..." "Midorikawa. Midorikawa Ryuuji." "Okay. It's nice to meet you, Midorikawa," they said in a monotone voice. "Nah, just Ryuuji is fine."
(F/N) nodded. "Ryu is quicker. Can I call you that?" Midorikawa smiled. "Of course! Can I call you (N/N)?"
(F/N) nodded. It seemed that Midorikawa either didn't notice or didn't mind their blank expression or dull eyes. Hopefully this friendship would last a long time.
~~~~~~~~

"You're so weird! Why don't you ever smile? Why are you so deadpan?"

Poor little (F/N) was sitting on a swing in the little garden at the back of the orphanage. They weren't swinging, but sitting there and staring off into space, when a boy with red hair that resembled a tulip walked over and bombarded them with questions.

(F/N) was of course, unfazed, but didn't want to talk about their mother.

Thankfully, Midorikawa (who (F/N) had discovered was indeed male) saw the whole thing and made his way over. "Leave them alone, Nagumo. Their past is none of your concern."

The red head, known as Nagumo, scoffed and walked off to annoy some silver haired boy.

Midorikawa turned to (F/N). "Are you okay?  Nagumo can be a real pain sometimes."

(F/N) shook their head. "No, I'm fine, Ryu. I'm used to it."

Midorikawa didn't seem quite convinced.

~~~~~~~~
Midorikawa wiped away the tears starting to fall from his eyes. (F/N) was being adopted. They had only known each other for a few years, but they were the best years of both of their lives, and Midorikawa had to admit, he did have a tiny crush on (F/N). He had gotten them to open up a little, which meant they really trusted him.
The two hugged goodbye and (F/N) was driven home by their new adoptive parents.
Every year since then, both Midorikawa and (F/N) would wish to see the other again on their birthdays. It never happened, and they were beginning to lose hope, until one magical day that would change their lives.
