I tend to lose myself when playing the guitar. I hadn't even realised I was softly singing along to my strumming until her hand slid over my shoulder, startling me.
"I didn't know you could play." She comments as she slides onto her knees beside me, interrupting my bubble of serenity and replacing it with embarrassment.
"I didn't mean to wake you up." I apologise indirectly, moving to set the guitar down before she stops me with a gentle hand on my arm.
"Carry on." She instructs calmly, "I like the rhythm."
Nodding, I pick the instrument up again, strumming the same chords as I had before though this time without words. She takes it upon herself to fill their space, humming first before singing a few lines.
"I didn't know you could sing." I mimic, chuckling as I change it up a bit for a chorus. When I glance at her, her cheeks have been dusted with a light shade of pink and she's already looking over at me.
"I spent all my teenage years singing karaoke." She laughs softly, "I'm not amazing."
"You are." I retort.
"I'm rusty." She shrugs, "We should get ready to get you home."
"I don't wanna go home." I pout, though place the guitar carefully against the wall before accepting her hand as she helps me stand.
"I don't want you too, either." She replies, "But I'd rather not get into trouble with your parents... again."
I hum in reply, laughing as she grimaces at her memories. Before I can stand, my phone buzzes nearby and I quickly check the notification.
"It's Lauren." I explain when Camila sends me a curious glance, "I forgot to ask but she wants to hang out. All of us."
"That'd be fun." Camila shrugs after only a moment of hesitation, "I mean, so long as you're comfortable with it. She is my ex, after all."
"She's chill." I respond, typing back a reply to the text.
Me: she's down. when/what do u wanna do?
"Cool." Camila grins, using my shoulder to push herself up into a standing position before holding her hand out to me. I take it and allow myself to be pulled up too.
Lauren: Awesome. Idk yet we'll have to think of something but I leave in two weeks. Any time before then ig
I relay the information to Camila who nods once, before slipping my phone into my pocket and preparing for my return home.
"Wait, that's it!" I blurt after a moment of thinking, stopping in my tracks to her car.
"What?" She frowns confusedly, stopping too and locking the red front door.
"Lauren. It's already set up perfectly. There's photos of us from that party and we can have her pick me up from school or something. All I really need to do is make sure someone's watching, give her a hug, and get in her car. They don't know her so they won't know that we're not together, and then all the rumours will go away." I explain, "Better than Emilie, right?"
She hums in consideration, not making another noise as she moves passed me into the driver's seat of her jeep.
