Nerves run through my veins as I hear my name being called. I make my way on trembling legs to the stage, jogging up the steps and heading over to the principal.
"If there was anybody I doubted, it was you, Y/n." She begins to speak, making a hush fall over the already quiet auditorium. She hasn't said anything to anybody else, have I failed? Has she decided to screw up my social life by announcing it to the front of the entire senior year and faculty body? Then, though, she smiles and continues, "You've proved me wrong."
Cheers erupt in the room when she hands me the diploma, taking my hand and grinning down at the cameraman. I do the same for a moment before scanning the audience for my family, Cara, and Camila. My gaze first falls on a group of silent girls near the front, one of them Emilie who narrows her eyes at me. Then, I find a large group of boys making a huge deal out of nothing, jumping from their seats and acting like apes. The fact that I don't know them leads me to believe that their reaction might be down to something else, that and the not-so-discreet beer bottles in their gown sleeves. Chuckling, I look towards the back of the room. There, one particular group of faces stands out to me.
My parents are smiling encouragingly, clapping too. Beside them, Cara's family, the girl herself, and then Ashley. Cara is letting out loud cheers and clapping her hands above her head, her own diploma tucked between her knees. Behind them all, standing against the wall, Camila winks, smiling the most feverently. It's only then that my fears about us begin to fade, because we've made it. Nobody can take us away from each other now.
I make sure of that nearly two years later when I buy her a ring and drop to one knee above the waterfall that looks out over the city.
And I make sure of that only a year after that when I tell her "I do," and she tells me the same.
And I make sure of that for the years beyond when we wake up in the mornings and I kiss her and tell her I love her before we both have to get ready, her for work and myself for college.
And I make sure of that when she tells me she's ready for another person to love, and we head down to the foster home and apply to adopt a child.
And I will continue to make sure of that through the rest of our lives.
...
"Gra'mama!" I greet the woman standing at the door teasingly, mimicking what my daughter did just seconds before.
"Hello, lovelies." She smiles, pulling my into a hug before reaching down and scooping Olivia into her arms. The girl giggles excitedly and launches herself into my mama's embrace.
"Hey, Mom." I smile when the other woman emerges from their car, taking the grocery bags from her arms and leading her inside, "How have you guys been?"
"Good, good." She sighs contently, bracing herself when a little boy comes charging in her direction and wraps his arms around her legs.
"Wait- Noah!" A familiar voice calls out, followed quickly by a sigh when she realises it's too late. Camila smiles tiredly when she notices me watching her, pressing a kiss to my cheek before turning her attention back to Noah and my mother.
"Sorry, he escaped when I was trying to clean his face." She apologises breathlessly, managing to turn him around and wipe off the remaining food that stains his cheeks despite how he squirms. Once done, she spins and collects her sunglasses from the kitchen counter, propping them up on her head.
"It's fine," Mom chuckles, bending down to lift him and making sure he was all cleaned up.
"Olivia's telling me you're getting a puppy?" Mama questions when the pair join us, raising an eyebrow in question.
"An' a pony!" Olivia calls excitedly, raising her hands up in the air.
"We'll see." I sigh, but can't help but grin as I unpack the bags.
"Right! Are we all ready to go?" Camila asks, wrapping an arm around my waist.
"Basket's packed." I confirm, "Are the kids ready?"
"Yep." She nods.
"Pic-a-nic!" Olivia squeals, giggling again as she's set down with her brother who almost-inaudibly laughs along with her. The twins toddle off in front of my parents as they head to the car, Camila and I staying behind for a moment longer.
As soon as we're alone, she spins me around to face her and presses a humming kiss against my lips, smiling into it before she pulls away.
"What's gotten into you today, hm?" I question as my arms snake their way around her waist, holding her close. It might just be the way the light hits her face from the window above the sink, but she's positively glowing.
"I'm just happy." She sighs contently, "You make me so happy, Y/n."
My lips break into another smile as I plant a kiss on her in return, "And you make me happy, too."
"We should go before the kids destroy the car." She advises.
"Eh, my parents can deal with them for a minute longer." I grin, leaning down yet again.
The car's honk interrupts us, and we both let out little laughs before grabbing last minute essentials and making our way out to our impatient family.
