"Chalice, are you sure about this? You've been pushing yourself much more than usual..." Leisra was hot on the lead warrior's heels, clutching her spellbook close to her chest. Chalice fiddled with the cuff of her left glove, right over her one connection with her main power source.
"I'm sure. This is what will end it. The war ends here Leisra. I swear on my life."
"You know I hate it when you say that. You treat your life like it's something cheap..."
"A life lost in battle is a life well spent. And if it's in the final battle for our freedom from the chaos, it's worth it."
"Not my point."
"Sorry sorry, went on a rant there. I'll be careful, okay?"
"... okay. But you better let Forkington and I help you this time. Don't let all the heat focus on you again."
"I'll try."
...
That conversation had happened hours before the bloody battle. Countless lives were lost, and many of the chaos creatures vanishing back into energy. Chalice was standing in the middle of the field, one hand holding tightly onto her spear to keep herself steady, the other resting on her new wound on her stomach. She had used the last of her power to destroy the leader of the chaos, its defeat had caused the rest to fall into disarray, making her army able to claim an easy victor. Her breathing was shallow, pain shooting from her wound and now bleeding left wrist.
"Chalice!!!" She turned her head to the shouting. Leisra and Forkington were quick to reach her side, Leisra lowering her hood so she can see the warrior better.
"Oh my gosh, are you okay?!"
"Chalice, what were you thinking!? You took on too much and now you're hurt! Come on, we need to get you back—"
"Not yet..." Forkington stopped mid sentence when the warrior cut him off. Chalice's gaze was trained back on the battlefield. The fire of battle hadn't left her eyes yet.
"Not until... we've won." Leisra's ears perked up at that. Chalice never left a battlefield until they won. She always saw every battle to the end. No matter how injured Chalice was, she never left. Leisra smiles smally and felt tears start to fall. She rested her small paw on Chalice's back, the other resting on Chalice's hand on her spear.
"It's over Chalice. The war's over... we won." Chalice smiles softly at looked down at the young cat, finally allowing herself to fall to her knees. Leisra quickly knelt down next to Chalice and started using her heating magic to help treat the wound, Forkington running off to get a medical team. Chalice didn't stay conscious for long, her vision fading to black.
...
Chalice has faded in and out of consciousness in the medicinal wing for hours on end. They were running out of hope for saving the warrior, and Chalice already knew she wouldn't make it. She had traded her last bit of life force for the abilities she needed to win that last battle.
"I know you're awake Chalice. Please... just look at me." Chalice opened her eyes and smiled at her best friend right hand.
"You knew, didn't you?"
"We both knew. We just hoped you wouldn't use it."
"Forkington, you should know better by now."
"... Leisra kept trying to say you you know. She kept trying to figure out a way to get the symbol off your wrist, anything to save you." Chalice was silent for a moment. Of course Leisra would try to save the warrior against all odds.
"You'll make sure she grows up safe, right?"
"Of course."
"... I don't have much longer... could you get her? I want to say goodbye." Forkington nodded before walking out of the room. After a moment, both of the right hands were back in Chalice's tent.
"Hey Chalice.""Hey kiddo. C'mere." Leisra walked over to Chalice's bed, lowering her hood so that Chalice could see her face. Chalice smiles at the young mage and sighed.
"You know, I may not have ever gotten that family, but you were the closest I've ever gotten to having a daughter." Hearing those words was enough to put the young kitten to tears, covering her face with her paws.
"I.. I'm sorry I couldn't save you... I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm so sorry!"
"It's okay. You could only do so much."
"But I..." The young mage covered her mouth and her form shook with silent sobs. Forkington soon stepped next to the kitten and rested a hand on her shoulder. Chalice's smile widened and tears started to fall from her eyes as well. She held her hands out to the two and each right hand took one.
"Thank you two. For everything."
"Thank you too Chalice. For being my closest friend."
"Thank you Chalice. For giving me a chance to be who I was meant to be."
Chalice's heart soared as her eyes finally closed, her heart halting to a stop.
