(Smudge is in the same universe as the Forgotten Angel AU)

Quiet. Henry was taking his time waking up after his knockout at the end of the first chapter. Without Henry, the story couldn't continue. Not that the ink demon minded. It allowed it a chance to shrink down while there were no threats around, and explore his surroundings much more effectively. He had the cutouts to serve as his eyes, yes, but they could only do so much.

He had a hand on the wall as he continued to walk down the hallway. It was familiar to him, but there were some loose floorboards and objects that could possibly injure him if he wasn't careful in his larger form.

He froze once he heard sniffling from around the corner. The entire studio wasn't in his head at once while he was smaller, making it easier to hear, but he was still hesitant. It could be a trick, a trap to capture anyone who was foolish enough to help. He quickly switched his vision to a nearby cutout, only to freeze at what he saw.

It was another version of him, only smaller and with his head buried in his hands. The demon hesitantly took a couple steps forward to make sure the toon could hear him before stopping, making sure he was out of sight.

"Hello?" The look-a-like jumped, and the demon was surprised at what he saw. His form wasn't solid, it was as if it was liquid that was barely holding itself together. Like he wasn't... finished.

"W-Who's there?" The toon sounded young, and very scared. Much like how the demon was.

"It's okay. I'm not here to hurt you. What's wrong?" Hearing that seemed to calm the new face, a knot of pity settling in the demon's stomach. So naive, so trusting... he wouldn't survive a day down here.

"I... I don't like this place. I'm all alone and my best friend Alice might be... she..." the toon cut himself off, covering his mouth and starting to cry again, his body's shape losing itself even more. The demon was frozen. If the toon didn't emotionally stabilize itself soon, it would surely fall apart in that state.

"Do you have any idea where she could be?"

"No... I don't... we got separated when this all happened and I—" the toon cut himself off again as it started to cough, falling to his knees. The demon, without thinking, dashed out to the small toon, carefully helping him up to his feet. The toon looked up at the demon and his eyes widened.

"You... look just like me." The demon felt his heart grow cold and he shook his his head.

"Not important. We need to get you upstairs so you can get finished—"

"That won't help me now." The demon was surprised to hear that, and only then did he become acutely aware of the toon's ink running out of his hands.

"It's too late... but... thank you for offering to help. My name is Bendy. What's yours?" The toon's voice was weak, and the demon felt tears start to fall.

"I... the ink demon." He didn't get a respond, the toon was gone as soon as the words escaped him. The demon froze for a few seconds before falling to its knees, shaking and sobbing. This was the first time someone it wasn't instructed to kill died in front of him... and it couldn't save him...

It was a monster... just like Joey always said...

When Joey's voice cut through his thoughts to transform and ready himself for Henry, he didn't even hesitate to listen. Anything to distract him from the pain of losing someone who could have been a friend.

Loop 23. No Bendy this time. There's a possibility he could have come into contact with the ink demon, and that resulted in him passing away before he could get help. No signs of a struggle either... I wonder... was the demon trying to help him?
