The next few days flew by in a hazy field of fog, however, I did not see much of Hayes I decided to throw myself into work and fixing up the apartment. Still, I couldn't help but wonder why I hadn't seen him in a couple of days, even if by accident. I thought maybe he was avoiding me because I kept asking questions about his family, it's not my fault that he just randomly up and left. I wanted to know more and to ask more, but he wasn't outside my door asking for WiFi, nor was laughing at my silly mistakes anymore. He vanished, and when I questioned Becca she couldn't tell me a single thing, she said Matthew did the same thing. He did come around however about two weeks later bright and bubbly as ever.
"Well hello stranger," he spoke softly but also cheery. "I think the stranger is an understatement, so where have you been mystery boy?" I asked sternly but also giggly, "I had to go out of town for business, sorry I didn't let you know," he replied sarcastically as if it wasn't any of my business to know where he was, which it wasn't, but I was still curious nonetheless. "Well when someone goes missing I get a little freaked out, I mean you vanished, just... poofed into thin air."
"Well you can never be too precise on thin air now can you?"
This question stumped me, as because I did not have an answer, he was good like that, turning the conversation into a course I did not expect, but like any good acquaintance, I went along with it. "I just hope the air isn't too thin, you might lose your breath." The air in the hall became chilly and I was wigged out at the thought of losing my breath in thin air, hypochondriac I know. "Well it's good to know you are doing ok, next time let someone know, Ms. Flesh down the hall thinks that you're an undercover spy, she's a little on the backward side." I gestured my hands to spin circles on the outside of my temples to show her brain was scrambled.
"Thanks for the heads up, I'll be sure to do that, I'll even leave her a handwritten letter next time." We laughed at the comment and the hallway became warm again. "How would you like to go on a proper date since the last one didn't seem like one to you?" He looked nervous I stayed cool and in charge, "I'll have to check my schedule, I might be going out of town soon...." I smirk at him in hopes he catches the bait.
"Oh I see how it is, well we better make plans before you leave." "I would like that very much actually." He smiles and I giggle as we make plans to go to a music festival coming up next weekend, I'm not a fan of big crowds but I think I can make an exception. "Well I'll see you next weekend and probably sometime between that." He leans in and kisses my cheek, I blush and have no blush covering the redness of my face and how hot and flushed my cheeks were. We exchanged our goodbyes and I turned into my apartment and shut the door behind me. And for the first time in a long time, I jumped in joy and danced on my couch.
"What the hell is going on out here?" I turn and see Becca standing staring at me like I'm some sort of madman. "Oh, nothing...." I stumped, "Just uh... have a date... no big deal." "No big deal?!?" She jumps out on the couch and joins in my excitement. We fell tired and in a good mood.
"So..." Becca starts, "Matthew asked me to meet his parents..." "Holy guacamole are you serious??? That's huge, isn't it?" "Ya it is, I just don't want to mess it up," I roll my eyes, "No way can you of all people mess up meeting the parents." She sighs in relief, "I'm glad you said that, I just hope they like me, I like Matthew, a lot."
"And if Matthew likes you, then his parents will like you, there's nothing to not like about you," she gave me a hug and headed for the kitchen. "Also!" I remembered, "We have GOT to go shopping you know I can't just wear my good ole khakis and t-shirt on a date I have no idea what to wear but I know that can't be it."
"Please Michelle, trust me, I've got the perfect out for whatever possible date." This is true considering she went on every possible date you can think of, "Where are you guys going anyways?." "The music festival next weekend...." "Done,"
She walked out and was back 5 minutes later, she had some ripped light jean shorts, a black tank with a red plaid button-up, and black vans, "and I'll even do your hair and makeup free of charge." "You're a lifesaver I swear, this is gonna be perfect I'll repay you somehow." "Just keep talking me up with the parents and we'll call it even." "Deal." Now I sighed in relief. Smiled the outfits are simple but also cute enough to show off some skin which I haven't done since I've met Hayes, he probably thinks I'm some weird bookworm who drinks coffee and watches Netflix TV show reruns... Okay, I do but this will prove I can be fun, hopefully.
