The way they cast voice actors is they'll take whatever they got , take note of what what they sound like, how they act and their body language. They also take note of gender and how old or young they sound and any other helpful information that will help them cast. Usually they'll get the people who auditioned and take them into a separate room (one at a time) and get them to read a few lines for different characters . And figure out who should have what role. The role they came in for usually isn't the one they get. When they are casting they try to get a English voice actor who sounds similar to the Japanese voice actor. There aren't very many squeaky sounding girls so it's kinda hard to cast for prepubescent boy anime characters. (Source.2 animenetwork.com/answerman)

Some basic anime terms are "Shounen" shounen is anime\manga target demographic is for boys. Some examples of shounen anime would be "Sword Art Online" , "Naruto" , "Dragon Ball Z", "Attack On Titan" "My Hero Academia" or anything you see on the cover of "Shonen Jump magazine", but girls can enjoy shounen just as much. Another term is "Shojo" shojo is the counterpart to shounen. Which means anime\manga target demographic is for girls. Some examples of this would be "Ouran Highschool Host Club" , "Sailor Moon", "Say 'I love you' ", "My Love Story", "Fruits Basket" and "Pillow Boys" but again boys can enjoy these just as much. The next term is "Seinen" these animes\manga have target demographic for men 18-40 years old. Seinen is more serious and pays more attention to plot. Some examples would be "Akira" , "Tokyo Ghoul" , "One Punch Man" , "Black Bullet" , "Ajin" , "Parasight". Another one is "Bishounen" , you might notice "Shounen" is in it, Bishounen means "pretty boys" , bishounen is when a girl or boy has a sexual attraction to a anime boy that would be called "Bishounen". Because this is personal preference there aren't really examples. All though the stereotype would be tall, slim, with long-ish hair. Short for "Bishounen" is "Bishi". The counterpart to it would be "Bishoujo" , "Bishoujo" is the term for "pretty girls" , its the exact same but with girls. Yet another term is "Loli" , "Loli" means prepubescent girls. They'll look under 13 no matter how old they are. Some examples would be Louise (from Zero's Familiar), Shiro (from No Game, No Life), Yui (from Sword Art Online) , Flandre Scarlet (from Touhou Project). If you have a sexual attraction to a loli you would be called a "Lolicon" , remember its appearance and not age. The counterpart to loli is "Shota" , so instead of prepubescent girls, its prepubescent boys. Some examples of shota boys would be Ciel (from Black Butler) , Pico (from Boku No Pico), there are more, but not any popular ones. The eighth term is "Loli-Shota" , a loli-shota would be a boy who acts pretty young for his age and a little girly. The only popular example really is Honey (from Ouran Highschool Host Club). The next is "Harem" that's when the anime is mainly focuses on a love story about a boy surrounded by girls. Some examples of that would be "Date A Live" , "Zero's Familiar" , "School Days" , "Heaven's Lost Property". A "Reverse Harem" is when a theres a love story about a girl surrounded by boys. A few examples would be "Ouran Highschool Host Club" , "Kiss Him, Not Me" , "Fruits Basket". A "Trap" is a girl who is actually a guy ! (bamboozled) (Source 4. Akidearest on YouTube)
