Woohoo!! I figured out the photobucket thingy so there's a slideshow now ;)The stars are for italics :)
It was dark, wet, and cold. Her heels were slipping dangerously and her clothes were sticking to her slim body. She ran to get to the car, but her heel caught on a pebble, sending her to her knees. She tried to catch herself, but it was too late, her head hit the pavement with a sickening crack. Pain flooded her brain, but she couldn't be bothered to respond. Blackness was taking over her...
Her eyelashes fluttered slightly. They were stuck together, making it difficult to open her eyes. When they opened, she quickly shut them again. Too much light, she thought, wincing at the pain. Now that she thought about it, her head hurt terribly. She carefully cracked her sage eyes a little, letting them adjust, and then opened them a little more. She repeated this until they were open all the way. Turning her head gingerly, as even this made it throb, she surveyed her surroundings. She was in her bedroom, alone.
Or not. She looked at the big reading chair in the corner of her large room. He was asleep in it, his face peaceful.
She smiled. "Donovan...? Hey, what happened?" she asked curiously as he slowly woke up. He smiled at her groggily, and then did a double take. He was immediately wide awake and by her side.
"Avery! You're awake!" he breathed, "I was so worried! Don't you dare do that to me again! I don't care how wet you're getting." Avery laughed.
"You're LAUGHING?" he practically screamed. "You were seriously hurt!!"
"Donovan, Donovan! Calm down. I don't really remember what happened," she said, smiling at him even though his yelling had hurt her head.
"Oh. Well then. So, you see, we were at this party...."she listened quietly while Donovan rambled on about the party.
"...and then the police showed up, so I grabbed you and ran around the back and went through the woods to get to the car. Then it started to rain and you freaked because your hair was getting wet or something. So while you were trying to keep your hair dry, *I* was starting the car. That was when you fell..."Donovan looked at her, and was surprised to see that her eyes were closed and she was sleeping peacefully. Not like before, when her face was a mask of pain. He smiled and leaned over to brush her hair off of her face. Then he pulled the covers up around her and sat for the next few hours, content just watching her sleep.

"Avery?" Mirabella called from the door to her best friend's room. When there was no answer, she opened it slowly and walked in. There was a big lump on the bed, and as she got closer, she stifled a laugh. Donovan and Avery were sleeping...in the same bed. Although that had not been an uncommon thing when they were little, it was slightly awkward now.
They do look really cute though, Mirabella thought. Donovan had his arm wrapped around Avery, and her face was buried in his chest with one of her hands resting lightly on his shoulder. She smiled at them before she left.
Downstairs, Mirabella ran into Avery's dad coming home with the groceries.
"Oh, let me help you with those, Mr. Darling!" she offered. She loved Avery's dad, he was so fun.
"Oh, thanks, Mira. Much appreciated," he said with a wink. "And really, Mr. Darling?" he said wrinkling his nose. She laughed.
"Well, yeah, it is your name..." she said.
"But it sounds so girly. Call me Sean, please."
"Ok Sean," Mira smirked. Sean had never liked his last name. Although the name fit Avery perfectly. Everyone called her 'Darling.' She's kind of the baby of the school; everyone wanted to keep her safe. Mira didn't know how she did that to people.
That's actually what Mira had come here for. She was going to give Avery the card everyone had made for her today. Donovan was the only one who didn't sign it and that's because he skipped school to watch Avery.
"Hey, could you give this to Avery when she wakes...." She trailed off. Because Avery was walking down the stairs! She squealed and threw herself at Avery.
"You're up! How are you, Darling??" she smiled her magnetic smile and said,
"I feel loads better, actually!" then she leaned down and whispered in Mira's ear, "Does dad know Donovan's here?" she frowned.
"I don't think so," Mira whispered back.
"What are you girls whispering about?" Sean called from the kitchen.
"Boys!" Avery yelled back. We heard him chuckle from the kitchen, making Avery grin. But then her face got serious again.
You see, Sean and Donovan's dad, Ian, used to be best friends. But two years ago, Sean found Avery's mom, Taya, with Ian. He was really, REALLY hurt. Taya and Ian both said they were SO sorry and that they were drunk and didn't mean it. But Sean was mad and he told Ian that his wife dying didn't mean he could sleep around with other people's wives'. Taya got really mad at him for saying that because they were all really close and she knew Ian was still grieving for his dead wife.
Later Sean had said he was sorry, and Ian sort of forgave him, although they aren't close now. Taya and Sean tried really hard to stay together but they couldn't make it work. They fought all the time. Last month they got divorced. It was all really hard on Avery.
Anyway, her mom moved to California and had a serious boyfriend already. Avery lived with her dad and saw her mom during every holiday. The whole thing made Avery and Donovan even closer, if that was possible. They were literally inseparable. The only problem was, sometimes Avery's dad got upset when he saw Donovan, he just reminded him of his ex-best friend and ex-wife. Avery hated making her dad feel sad so she's been trying to keep Donovan away from her dad, at least until he's healed more. It's *had* only been a month since that happened...
"I'll go wake him up then; can you keep my dad busy?"
"Sure thing!" she chirped. Mira was honestly happy to help Avery in any way she could, the girl had been through so much.
***********
"Hey, Donovan..." Avery whispered. She gently shook his arm.
"Darling...?" he said groggily.
"Yeah, it's me. Shh, my dad's here, so you have to go now, ok? Sorry... I just..., well you know," she whispered. He sat up and brushed her hair back, caressing her cheek for a moment.
"Yeah, I know. Its fine," he whispered back. He got up and followed Avery to the guest bedroom. This was how they snuck in and out of the house; the guest bedroom had a tree placed conveniently under the window. As he climbed out, Avery whispered,
"Bye Donovan, thanks for staying with me. See you tomorrow,"
"Yep," he called up to her. She smiled down and left the room.
Only then did he say the last few words he'd wanted to say all day.
"I love you, Avery Darling."
