Dee could not believe her ears. She sat now at her hotel room lobby with a cup of steaming coffee set on the oak wood coffee table.
She bit her lower lip and was frowning. She was leaning over and one would think there was a debate going on in her mind.
The aroma of the coffee brought her back to reality. She sighed and picked the cup.
Why had Mason refused to acknowledge her?
She was playing all her memories she had with Mason. From when he made brownies when her mother was in the hospital right to when he comforted her when her bullies got the best of her.
He was a father figure. All this while he had acted like a father. Without even worrying about himself. He hadn't even gotten married yet and he was already close to his fifties.
She could see it now. The few grey hairs that were beginning to show. She never recalled when they started greying.
"Hey. You feel better?" max asked taking a seat next to her.
"A little," she said shakily, "I'm sorry to trouble you."
"it's no trouble, really!"
Silence fell between them as Dee wandered off in her thoughts.
"May I ask you a question if you don't mind?" max asked, shattering the silence.
"Sure," she sighed.
"Who was Mason?"
"Who.. Who was... Mason?"
"yeah," he shrugged, "Should be someone important if you've been quiet since you saw him."
"Well... He was my mother's friend. Way younger than my mother. You could say that my mom was his mentor. When she got injured in an attack, he took me in and took care of me while she recovered..."
Dee continued to explain all that mason had ever done for her. All the generosity he had shown, expecting nothing in return.
Max's PV
How did she look so beautiful?
She's rambling on about how mason planned for her 13th birthday, and max, barely paying attention was staring away at her.
His eyes, fixated on hers, drinking every expression they made.
Slowly he moved to her perfect little nose. He noticed small freckles and smiled softly.
"BOOM!" Dee exclaimed, bring Max's attention back to her wonderful brown eyes.
He chuckled, not knowing what the boom was for. She continued talking and he caught himself looking at how her lips moved.
Very expressive. Very soft.
Max snapped back to reality.
'What am I thinking? Why am i thinking of that? I'm so not into her', he thought, shaking his head as though it would shake of the thoughts he was having.
"Something wrong?" Dee asked.
"No. Nothing... It's just," he started flailing his arms around, "...mosquitoes I think. Pretty annoying, aren't they?"
"I guess," Dee answered.
Unknowing to Max, he was holding his breath, hoping she wouldn't see through that pathetic lie.
"So, what can be done now about mason?" max asked, getting rid of the awkward silence.
"I can't force someone to like me again. Nor can I force someone to have memories that I wiped out. I'm at crossroads. There's nothing I can do to fix this," her voice broke.
Max felt like his chest was being ripped in half as a tear fell from her beautiful brown eyes.
He moved closer to her and put an arm around her. The least he felt he could do was comfort her.
She leaned in as she silently cried, the shoulder, the only comfort she had.
It'll be okay. It has to be okay.
For a while, she was quiet. He could only feel her breath, calming him down too.

Dee's POV
The tears stopped flowing and everything was meaningless for a while.
She took a deep breath and inhaled some of Max's citrus perfume. It was unique and so soothing.
"Thank you," she whispered.
"What for?"
He started stroking her hair.
"everything?" she said looking up.
She did not expect them to be so close when she did.
But here she was, looking into his deep emerald eyes.
Her heart was beating faster. She felt feelings erupting in her heart, warmth overflowed but somehow leaving her palms cold.
"It's the least I could do," max said, his hands now at her cheek, wiping the tears.
Dee could not resist and leaned in.
Max, seeing her move, closed his eyes and moved closer, willing to let her do as she wished.
He could feel her lips brush on his when the bell rang, causing both of them to jump away.
Dee stood up abruptly and straightened her dress.
She cleared her throat and proceeded to open the door.
On the other side was a man in a military outfit. Scuffed and scarred but with a wide smile and tears in his eyes.
"Deedee?" he said, his voice breaking.
Dee looked at him confused.
"You... You are..." she stammered in disbelief.
"Yes, it's me Deedee!"
"D.. Dad?"
"Yes!!" he yelled and dropped his bags and gave her a tight hug.
Despite finally seeing her father, she was less delighted and more shocked.
Was he really there?
He pulled away and smiled widely at her.
Impossible.
