Elliots POV
Elliot had to admit, once the plane set down in LA she knew that she had made the right decision, knowing that if she hadn't come she would be beating herself up about it for the rest of her life.
LAX was nothing like Elliot thought it would be, but to be fair her only knowledge of the famous airport was in the song Party In The USA (a song her and Sister Helen listened to regularly). The airport was huge and futuristic looking, Elliot would even argue it was the most modern thing she had ever seen, it was also very crowded.
All sorts of people could be seen in airports, people leaving and people staying behind hoping to not be forgotten, Elliot saw families crying over leaving university students and couldn't help but feel envy. Envy that nobody cried when she left, she had nobody to cry when she left.
The weather, unlike England, was incredible hot. So incredibly hot that Elliot was starting to regret wearing her big sweater that had kept her warm at 4am in the bitter winter of England in November.
As she walked towards the exit after collecting her bag from the carousel and going through security Elliot suddenly stopped, much to the dismay of the a business man behind her.
This was it, this was the first step to her new life. A new life away from everybody she had known in her life, right now Sister Helen would tell her to pray the Lords prayer to ask Jesus to help her through it and ,even though she was far from catholic, Elliot stepped to the side set her baggage down and started her prayer.
It comforted her, to do something so familiar to her, because of the multiple time she had had to do it in the last seven years she had been living at the convent.
With a deep breath Elliot opened her eyes picking up her bags and started back towards the door, this time not stopping until she got to the taxi rank.
Quickly, she got into an Uber gave the elderly man the house address and sat back. A chance to breathe again as she watched her new surroundings wiz past. That seemed to represent America to Elliot, going too fast for her to comprehend, everybody stepping on each other to hoist themselves up to their fifteen minutes of fame.It was safe to say America was a world away from England, sure people used people all the time in england but in a different way. Maybe it was because she was brought up in the bustling council houses of Liverpool where everybody knew everybody and there was a sense of family around the estate.
Elliot grew up in a scruffy little house on the corner of the street with her Granny, Elliot had been living with her Granny since she was four years old when her mother decided for the first time that she didn't care for Elliot.
Elliots Granny, Margaret Barnes, was well known in the small community for running a Sunday school for the local Church and day care for children with parents looking for jobs. Margret had grown up in the estate, she had familiarised her self with the type of people that lived there.
Elliot learned from her Granny that people from the estate were the friendliest people you could ever meet, but even the best people had a secret agenda. That was something Elliot kept with her throughout her years at the convent, she wanted to know what peoples secret agendas were, she was curious is all.
Her mothers secret agenda was that she needed Elliot for single parent benefits. This didn't bother Elliot much, she obviously knew that her mother didn't love her like a normal mother would. However, Elliot never felt alone, whether she was speaking to Granny or old Archie the organ player at the church she could always keep a conversation, a habit she got from needing people to like her to fill the gap her absent parents had left, something Elliots therapist had told her years ago.
After handing over her newly exchanged $15 Elliot thanked the Uber driver and grabbed her bags to get out of the car.
The car left in a hurry while Elliot was still taking in the view in front of her.
"Holy shit" Elliot whispered to herself and she realised what she had done.
She had travelled half way across the world and was now standing outside of the house of a man that could make or break the rest of her life.
Elliot slowly walked up the drive way hearing loud voices from the back garden. 'One last deep breath for the day should do' Elliot thought to herself as she knocked on the door, regretting it immediately as the voices quietened down.
Only minutes later the door opened; a tall man with a shaved head and wrinkles opened the door suspiciously.
"Hello can i help you?" He asked, seemingly annoyed from the sight of a girl in front of him with her suitcases.
"Hi, I'm looking for Jason Nash. Do you know if he lives here?" The stutter in Elliots voice was obviously and it only worsened as the man cocked his eyebrow.
"Can I ask why you want to see him?" The man, still suspicious, was trying to work out why a young girl would be looking for him.
"My name is Elliot Barnes, my mum is Elizabeth Barnes, Jason Nash is my father"
