*Warning: Death is mentioned in this. Also an attempted suicide, if you're sensitive to that, please, don't read*

~Lily's POV~

A hot bead of sweat runs down the side of my face. I have been running for five minutes. Esmé has gone on a walk.

~Flashback because like, why not?~

"Lily, I'm gonna go on a 5 minute walk!" Esmé screams out to her friend Lily.

"Alright, but if you're gone for more than that, I'll beat your ass!" Lily screams back.

"Okay mom! I'll be walking by the river,"

~Flashback end~

Soon I hear splashes, an attempted scream. I pick up my pace. My heart stops right as I saw her.

The sight was horrific. She was raising her arm up out of the water and swaying it around. Her head was barley out of the water, and it would bob up and down.

Up

Down

I stare wide eyed at her as I scramble over to her. She looks so helpless, I want to scream. The type of scream you hear in horror movies when they see a dead body. I kneel down by where she's drowning and I grab her by her sweater sleeve. I put her into my lap. I panic, I could hear the water slosh inside her tiny gut. My brain went on auto pilot.

I set her down on the ground and start to push her stomach up and down.

Up

Down

I keep doing the same motion. Over and over.

Up

Down

I start to cry like crazy. My face has hot tears streaming down onto her lifeless face. Her eyes were closed, I couldn't see the pretty blue eyes. Her mouth was open slightly. Her arm was thrown to her side and the other draped over her chest. I open her eyes and they're rolled into the back of her skull.

I start to frantically go faster.

Everything happens so fast, she starts to cough out a flood. There was so much. I was shaking at this point. I didn't know her tiny body could take that much...

She's throwing up too much. I see her lunch and I gag.

There's nothing left in her...

She's empty.

She goes limp.

She's-

She's gone.

I was so fazed by this. I hold her close to my chest as I cry. Tears falling into her already wet hair. She smells like dead fish. I could hear the faint screams of other people, apparently others heard her and quickly ran over, but they were too late. I could hear them, see their mouths moving but my brain couldn't process anything. My best friend just died in my arms, just because I couldn't perform CPR.

Soon enough, there are red and blue flashes. They go over all over her. She's cold. Too cold. I hold her closer, hoping that she'll wake up. I could hear a police officer come over, and take her out of my arms. Leaving me there.

My world was gone. Everything starts to go black. I couldn't take this anymore. I wait until everyone leaves. After they do, I drag my feet against the wet mud. It sticks to my feet and makes squishing noises. I stopped crying, there's nothing left in me. I have nothing left. No Esmé.

Esmé.

She's really gone...

I stand over where I found her and slowly fall into it, my stomach hitting the water.

I jolt up. I'm in a bed. Bed? I look around. It's my room. The time was 4:57. Was it just a dream? I look down. Esmé. Esmé's still here. I cover my mouth to muffle my cries. She was a light sleeper.
