“I didn’t mean it like that,” Amber whispered, but Zayn didn’t hear her. He walked to Annalise, who had just climbed the tree she was up. Amber sat up, looking at Zayn. She got to her feet but fell back down. Her leg was tense and was aching with pain. She grabbed it, but showed no pain on her face. She didn’t want Zayn to come back. She crawled under the slide. It was shaded and blocked Anna and Zayn from seeing her.
Amber softly cried to herself. She pulled her phone out and saw that she got a text from Drew. She stared at the text for a few minutes before replying. Within minutes, she was laughing. It was a never-ending conversation.
“What are you doing under there?” Anna’s voice startled Amber.
“Oh, nothing! Just texting.” Amber replied.
“I thought you were the one who said you wanted to be in the sun.” Anna pointed out.
“Yeah, well maybe not directly in the sun!” Amber laughed. Anna got onto her stomach, laying down. Her arms held her head up, and she smiled.
“So who are you texting?” Anna asked.
“Drew,” Amber answered.
“Hey, Amber, is there something going on between you and Zayn?” Amber moved her hair out of her face, uncomfortably.
“Um-” Amber was cut off.
“Nevermind! I just thought that, maybe, something was happening. Forget I ever asked!” Anna told her. Amber nodded her head, not knowing what to say. “Oh! Talking about Zayn, he seemed a little upset. Did something happen?” Anna asked.
“He’s upset?” Amber asked.
“Yeah! He came over to that tree,” Anna pointed to the tree she climbed. “And ignored me! He seemed pretty upset! That’s why I was asking.” Anna replied.
“I don’t remember anything happening that might have made him upset.” Amber lied. Annalise must’ve believed her because she shrugged.
“Oh, well! We’ll have to do something to cheer him up, just not right now!” Anna said. Amber nodded her head. “Are you okay?”
“Me? I’m fine!” Amber gave Anna a reassuring smile.
“Then let’s go on the slide instead of hiding under it!” Anna pulled Amber to her feet. They climbed the slide. Anna slid down, laughing the whole way down. Amber got ready to go down, but someone grabbed her and hugged her. She looked behind her.
“Drew?” Amber asked.
“Miss me, babe?” Drew asked, smiling.
“What are you doing here?” Amber asked.
“To see your lovely face.” Drew answered. Amber blushed and looked away.
“First it’s Charlie, now it’s Drew?” Anna sighed. “I’ll leave you two alone.” Anna walked away, back to the tree she climbed. Zayn sat at the bottom of the tree staring blankly ahead.
“Heard you were having a party.” Drew told her, letting her go.
“Yes I am. You’re invited, and I’ll save you a dance. Good?” Amber asked.
“That’s not what I was here for, but yeah sounds good!” Drew replied.
“If you weren’t here for that, then what were you here for?” Amber asked.
“I was just going to ask if you wanted to have dinner.” Drew answered.
“Dinner? But it’s only-” Amber cut herself off. The sun was already going down. She pulled her phone out. 6:45p.m. “I didn’t know it was that late!”
