Destinee sighed with relief when she saw the kitchen of the Avengers headquarters was empty. While she loved her fellow Avengers, Destinee preferred to be by herself after her morning runs. Plus, it was always easier to cook when it was just her, where everyone in the building all liked different things.
She had just put the coffee on and was pulling some eggs and bacon from the fridge when she heard a door down the hall open then close, followed by footsteps coming into the headquarters. Destinee turned to see it was just Bucky Barnes, the newest member of their superhero group.
Destinee hadn't spoken to Bucky since he arrived, not like he had spoken to many besides Steve, Natasha, and Sam. He was slow opening up to everyone. Steve told her it was just because he thought everyone hated him where he was a former Hydra agent, even though everyone knew he had been brainwashed.
"Good morning," Destinee said, seeing if she could get him to open up to her. "You're up early."
"I could say the same to you."
Destinee tried not to let the shock show in her face. "I go for morning runs. Gotta keep in shape with all these Gods and super soldiers running around."
"Running, gross," Bucky muttered. "I didn't even like running before I joined the army. Especially so early in the morning."
"You're the polar opposite of Steve then," Destinee told him. "He's the reason I started running so early. He used to be my running buddy."
"Yeah, well, Steve is crazy."
Destinee chuckled. "Well, since you're up, do you want some breakfast?"
"Only if you're offering, don't go out of your way."
"As long as you like bacon and eggs, it's not going out of my way."
Bucky smiled at her. He had such a nice smile, Destinee hoped she'd see it more often.
As she made breakfast, the two kept talking. Destinee told Bucky how she joined the Avengers - she was a former S.H.I.E.L.D agent that happened to tag along on Avengers missions every now and then, until Tony decided to take her in as an official member when S.H.I.E.L.D fell - and told him some stories from some of her missions. Bucky told her about his life before he fell from the train, and some embarrassing stories from before Steve was injected with the serum.
Destinee worried that talking about his past life would hurt Bucky, or cause him to shy away from her again. But he didn't seem to mind too much. He did, she notice, stay away from the topic of his time at Hydra. Which was fine. Destinee didn't want to know what they did to him there. She already hated Hydra enough as it was.
The two were sitting across from each other at the counter when Steve came out of his room, already dressed in his gym clothes.
"Morning," he said to the two. "I see you started breakfast without us."
"Everyone sleeps in too late," Destinee responded. "I'd make you breakfast, too, if you didn't stop running with me in the mornings."
