You heard a knock on your door, peeking out to find no one. You were about to close the door when a white envelope on the floor stopped you. You raised an eyebrow as you picked it up.
"Who is it, darling?" your mother asked you.
"No one. Just a letter," you replied. It was addressed to you.
"For who?"
"Me."
"Oh?" your mother looked over your shoulder. "From whom?"
"I'm not sure." You carefully opened the envelope, your eyes landing on the bottom of the page which just says 'Eternally yours, An Admirer'. Your eyes widened, and you jumped to the beginning of the letter.
Dear Ms. L/N,
I know this may have come out of the blue, and I do hope that you are not too startled by this letter. I have seen you around town, and I cannot help but be entranced by your beauty; however, I was never able to approach you. Please do not be scared, we share mutual friends, whom I have interrogated for your address. I hope that you will find some comfort that your friends have entrusted me with the privacy of your home. Our friends seem to think very highly of you, and with every story, they tell me about you I cannot help but fall deeper in love.
Eternally yours,
An Admirer
His writing was neat and elegant. You weren't sure what to make of this letter. Should you write a letter back, but where would you address it?
"An admirer?" your mother questioned, reading the letter from behind you.
"It seems so." You nodded, handing your letter to her. She read over it again with an eyebrow raised.
"I'm questioning his sincerity if he does not even have the courage to approach you like a man." Your mother shrugged, putting the letter back in your hand. Your mother had always been protective of you since your father died at a young age, and it's just been the two of you. She wanted to make sure you weren't just married off for money or to just anyone. She made sure you understood that you are a woman of worth- beauty and intelligence.
"Mother," you half-heartedly lectured her.
"Remember what I always say," she said, putting a hand on your cheek.
"To never settle," you recited, smiling.
"Right." She smiled back. "Now c'mon, you promised you would help me pick out some textile for our next project."
You and your mother linked arms while walking to the Mulligan store where you usually get your fabric. Your two families were close, and you've gone out with Hercules a couple of times.
"Hello Hercules," you greeted.
"Hello Y/N," he took your hand and kissed it. "Mrs. L/N."
"Hello Hercules," your mother nodded to the man. "Have you prepared the fabric I asked you about?"
"Yes, Ma'am."
This was the act he had to follow in front of your mother, but you knew his true colors upon going out to the bar with him. You wanted to laugh at the double life he led, but instead, you opted to shake your head. There were more people in the store than previously. Hercules must be getting lots of business, you thought, eyeing the three men looking at various textiles near the entrance. One of them met your eyes, and you smiled politely.
"This'll do," your mother nodded in approval, holding on to the fabric. "Thanks, Hercules."
"Always a pleasure, Ma'am." He nodded to the both of you and saw you out.
