---There were only two people that Annie told about her crush in training days. Both times were for advice, and she was very lucky that neither of them spread the information she gave them.
The first person she entrusted with this sensitive information was Christa. No, Historia, that was her name now, wasn't it? That time, Annie willingly sought her out, knowing that the girl had experienced Sapphic attraction too.
The second person she told was not planned.
In the middle of the night, Annie sat up in a panic. She had woken up from a nightmare, and that was evident. Her bedsheets were messed around, and when she reached a hand to her face it came back wet.
The emotions in the nightmare were still fresh in her memory, though the details were starting to fade. She did remember one part, though. She had killed Mikasa in battle. Simply swatted her away and broken her back against a tree.
Annie looked over to where Mikasa was slumbering peacefully in her bunk, and almost sighed in relief at seeing her. But she didn't. Annie wiped her eyes again, and, pulling on some shoes, snuck out of the girls' dorm building. She needed some fresh air.
The night was cool and cloudless. Billions of stars made swirls in the sky above, and lit the ground almost as good as daylight. Annie walked beyond the treeline, and into the forest.
The cool air did its job well. With some deep breaths, Annie started to calm down. She walked a small way into the woods, sat down on a felled log, and closed her eyes.
Snap.
Annie opened her eyes. Please, please just be an animal. She strained her ears to listen closer. It sounded like... Oh, no. People were having sex out here.
Annie stood up, and turned around, and peered through the bushes, and silently thanked whatever deity was up there that the couple weren't actually having sex. Her relief faded, though, when she saw that one of the boys was-
Annie pushed her way through the bushes, and the boys broke apart from their... Overly passionate kissing.
"You told me we'd be alone!" Said the boy whose name Annie didn't know. She'd seen him around a bit, but they'd never spoken. He stood up and marched off, to the protests of Reiner. After his night lover had left, he turned to Annie.
"What the hell was that for?" Reiner asked, buttoning up his shirt to hide the love bites. Annie walked over.
"You aren't allowed to be out here," she said.
"Yeah, well, neither are you," Reiner snapped. It was then he noticed the drying tear streaks down her face. "Hey, are you okay?"
Annie frowned at him. "We're in the middle of a war, infiltrating enemy territory, pretending to be friends with all these people. Of course I'm not okay."
Reiner closed his eyes and smiled at the ground. "Come on, sit down." He patted the ground next to him.
Annie looked at the ground next to her fellow warrior in disgust. He picked up on what she was thinking.
"Hey, don't worry, we didn't do... That."
"I'm still not sitting down there."
"That's fair."
Annie leaned against a tree and sat down - far enough away so that she wasn't sitting anywhere near the makeout spot.
"Wanna tell me what's eating at you?" Reiner asked.
"Some gremlin in about seven years," Annie deadpanned.
"Ha ha, very funny. I'm serious; why were you crying?"
Annie looked away. "I wasn't."
"Bullshit." Reiner stood up, walked over to Annie, and sat down again. "Just tell me what's going on."
Annie hugged her knees. She didn't want to tell him about her crush, but she also didn't know how long she could keep avoiding Reiner's questions.
"Ihadanightmare," she mumbled lowly.
"Pardon?"
Annie looked up at him. "I had a nightmare. There, I said it." She kicked around a bit of bark with her toe.
"You wanna talk about it?"
"Not particularly." Annie squashed the bit of bark into the ground. "But you're going to keep pushing anyway, so I guess I'll tell you."
Reiner crossed his legs, rested his elbow on his knee and his face in the palm of his hand. "I'm listening."
Annie took a deep breath, as she started to explain. She guessed it might be easier for her to explain her situation to another warrior.
"In the dream, I had to kill somebody. Somebody that I... Care about."
"Hold up - you like somebody?" Reiner grinned. "Who knew that you could actually feel love."
Fuck you, Annie thought. She gave Reiner a look that conveyed that thought.
"So, who's the lucky guy?" He continued.
"That's the problem," Annie said. "She's a she."
Reiner sobered. "Okay."
"And she's Mikasa Ackerman."
A long pause followed.
"I can see where that might be a problem."
Another long pause.
"I don't know what to do," Annie said. "She'll kill me if she finds out what we did. She could kill me. And even without all of that, I'd never be able to talk to her. She's so obsessed with her friends, she doesn't care about anyone else."
"Well," Reiner started, "I don't know if it would work or not, but you could always try making her jealous."
"How will that work?" Annie asked.
"It's like, you get close with other people, and spend more time with them and she feels like-"
"No, I know what jealousy is," she said. "If that was going to work, she'd have to be talking to me to start with, like, every day..."
Annie, having a sudden realisation, looked in the direction the guy had walked off in. "No," she breathed.
"I'm not trying to make Bertholt jealous, if that's what you're thinking," Reiner said, a little too rushed and forced-laughy to really be believable.
Pathetic, Annie thought. She stood up. "Whatever. I can't be with her. We can't be with anyone," she added, referring to the guy who'd walked off, even though she knew Reiner was just using him. "We have the mission to think about. No distractions, no attachments."
