Sean and Kaycee. It's rare for people to not know who the two are. Both were the top two in almost everything in school. Sports, academics, performing, you name it. They were favored by almost every teacher in school. Everyone respected them and no one dared trying to cross them. So does this mean that they were the best of friends?
No. Not even close.
They were rivals. They always try to outshine each other in everything they do. They don't remember exactly when and how it started, but it never stopped. It was like an unspoken rule to them that whoever wins in something, the other gets bragging rights. Them having the same classes in everything didn't help either. It wasn't healthy competition, it was just competition.
"A huge congratulations to Mr. Lew for getting a perfect score in AP Calculus for the third time in a row!" The math teacher announced, proudly clapping.
Cheers and claps erupted in the classroom, congratulating him. Sean nodded at them but he wasn't paying attention though. He took that little opportunity to turn around and glanced at Kaycee, who was shooting daggers at him. She got an A with a grade of 97%. He smirked, knowing he won this time.
"Thank you, Miss Anderson. I couldn't have done it without you" Sean said to his teacher.
"I couldn't have done it without you" Kaycee mumbled to herself, throwing her Calculus book in her locker. "Please" She scoffed.
"Kaycee" Her best friend, Tahani, sighed at her. "Please don't start"
"If only you saw his face Tahani! He was taunting me with his evil smirk that I would like to punch" Kaycee defended herself, slamming her locker door before locking it.
"Don't you think competing with him for years is enough?"
"Yes. That's why he needs to give up." Kaycee checked the time on her phone. "Well, it's nearly time for dance class. Let's go!"
Tahani mentally sighed as she followed her best friend who was running towards their next class. Kaycee was really excited because it was her favorite class. Dancing had always been a passion inside of her. She fell in love with it years back when her mom put her in a hip hop class. She was hoping it would be a class she would outshine Sean in too. But to her surprise, he was an excellent dancer himself.
Feeling determined to do great in dance, she pushed the door open. Kaycee ran inside excitedly and looked for their choreographer for today. She wasn't paying attention to her steps and bumped into someone.
"Sorry" Kaycee said softly, feeling embarrassed that she hit someone.
The boy met her eyes and Kaycee's face turned dark. "I take it back. I'm not sorry"
Sean smirked at her. "Well look who it is. Miss Kaycee Rice, now ranked as the second highest grade in Calculus"
Kaycee scoffed, folding her arms. "Funny for you to say that, Mr. Third in World Geography"
"You're going down in dance"
"I'll pull you down lower"
Julian, Josh and Tahani listened to their friends argument. It was always like this when they bumped into each other. That's why they preferred when they stay at opposite sides of the room, only giving each other side glances.
Luckily for everyone, the teacher entered the room with one other guy. Sean and Kaycee silenced themselves when they took notice of his presence and walked to their friends on different sides of the room, giving each other one last glare.
Picking up choreography wasn't a problem of Sean and Kaycee. They were quick learners who were often attentive to what the choreographer was saying. Even though they had never met the choreographer and his assistant before, it wasn't that hard to pick up the choreo.
