Chapter two:
POV: Virgil
Virgil sighed a breath of relief when he shifted back into his human form. Virgil's anxiety had been through the roof as he had led Roman through the forest. The purpled haired teen had often seen Roman on the edge of the forest, practicing fighting or gathering materials for his brother's shop. He had been scared that Roman would have recognized him, as he often visited him in his raven form. But Luckily that didn't seem to be the case.
Relaxing his shoulders Virgil trudged through the forest. He started to head back to camp rather slowly when he realized that he needed to pick up the pace. Patton had been covering for him as he led Roman to a safe area and Virgil wasn't sure how much longer the kind-hearted werewolf would be able to hold out, as Patton had never been very good at lying. Virgil now speed walking towards his adoptive home, started to think about the boy that he had left in the clearing. Regret trickled into Virgil's thoughts as he remembered the pained look on the knights face as Virgil left him the grove alone.Fine. I'll go back out to check on him after tonight's activities. Virgil thought grumpily. Virgil pushed his way through the bushes into his childhood home. With a rather annoyed look on his face, Virgil surveyed the area, making sure that no one noticed his entry. As he was supposed to be in his tent. Reassured that no one realized he had snuck out Virgil carefully made his way back to the tent that he shared with Patton.
Now the Werewolf camp was nothing very fancy but Virgil appreciated its simplicity. Currently, Virgil was passing by several Leather tents, as he was in the homing district of the Werewolf tribe. Virgil approached a rather worn looking tent that had a warm orange and yellow light leaking out from the inside and bright colorful banners and streamers hanging every which way. Carefully The were-raven approached the tent and slipped inside. Immediately he was greeted by a bone-crushing hug. "IM SO GLAD YOU MADE IT BACK SAFE!" Patton practically squealed. The warmth from both the tent and Patton's gaze as he let go of Virgil warmed his cold exterior. "Me too," Virgil said rather quietly as he moved to sit down on their shared bed. Running his hand through his bangs anxiously"Did anyone notice that I was gone?"
Patton shook his head and moved to sit next to Virgil. Curling up against him like a puppy. The Empath sighed contently as Virgil started to play with his hair. "How did it go?" Patton looked up at Virgil grinning "Did you ask him out?" He teased. Virgil blushed and batted at Patton. "O-of course not! I was in raven form the whole time, how would I have been abl-" Virgil spout off quickly but was cut off by Patton's giggles which only made Virgil blush more from embarrassment. Giving a light cough to break the tension the emo gave Patton a slight glare.
"Oh Come On Kiddo, I was just trying to ruffle your feathers" Patton's face burst into a wide smile at the pun only to let out an "Oof" as he was pushed off Virgil's lap and onto the matted floor. Though Virgil wouldn't admit it, the pun had gotten to him and he was smirking slightly. Covering his face with his hand Virgil flopped back onto the bed letting his head rest against the rather soft mattress.
Virgil stared up at the ceiling of the tent, letting his thoughts wander as his friend made his way back onto the bed. The were-ravens feet dangled slightly off the floor as his body relaxed into the worn, yet comfortable piece of furniture. Virgil couldn't stop thinking about the tall brown-haired boy. His noble features, and blinding smile. The Dark-colored shapeshifter was now smiling with his eyes closed and his hands covering his face in an embarrassed and flustered manner.
Virgil had forgotten for a moment that Patton was in the tent with him, and as he went to open his eyes again, Patton was staring down at him with a slight smirk on his face. Though, the empath did not say anything the look was clear enough. Turning his face away from his friend quickly Virgil sat up, using his hands to hold himself up. "This stays between us," Virgil whispered, knowing that his friend would be able to hear him. Virgil was scared of what the pack would think, not only was it that the guy he liked was Human but a knight no less.
Werewolves and more specifically Shapeshifters had been hunted for generations, almost to extinction. Which was mostly in part to the almost ritualistic killing of Werewolves and Shapeshifters. Knights and Nobels had started to glory hunt as a right of passage of sorts, a kings kill, mostly because of how hard they were to catch. Which, Mass genocide, Virgil supposed, generally doesn't really leave a great impression.
But He knew that Roman was different. Virgil had seen him grow up and had tried to help the budding knight to be the best person he could be. Even if Virgil hadn't been able to talk to him.
Shaking his head of his thoughts Virgil stood up, his signature scowl returning to his face. Patton sighed, sensing a change in attitude came up next to the brooding teen. Virgil had stuck his hands into his hoodie pockets and had pulled up his hood.
"You ready to go out there, Bud?" The werewolf asked, sensing that Virgil was ready to end the conversation.
With a slight nod, Virgil led the way, pushing back the tent flaps and started to lead the pair towards the center of camp. Today was the night of the Holy moon. Meaning that the camp was completely covered in decorations. Lanterns hung from every tent, banners of the moon Goddess were hung anywhere they could be, Streamers and candles littered the ground, and pups ran around the camp streets waving around their ceremonial sticks and necklaces as if they were playthings.
Virgil, though was not a werewolf, celebrated the day of the Holy moon. And it was one of his favorite holidays, even if it centered around werewolf customs. The day of the Holy moon was a night where the whole pack got together and celebrated the moon goddess. As she had granted them with a gift that they would never forget. To celebrate the moon goddess, they drank, Fought, Told stories and decided the new Alpha, Beta, and Omega of the pack.
Though it was uncommon for serious challenges to be brought up during the time of decision it was a tradition for at least the Alpha and Beta to fight over rank. Virgil, however, was never much for fights. Everyone in the werewolf camp was much bigger and stronger than he was. They had fangs and claws, and all he had was feathers and talons. Not much against a wolf. But that didn't mean that he wasn't taken seriously. For a wereraven, Virgil was incredibly muscular. He had been trained to be a werewolf, and because of it, he had developed similar physical strength, just not to the extent of the other shapeshifters, who had the power of the moon goddess flowing through their veins.
The sun was now fully set, and the lanterns were in full shine, providing the camp with a nice warm light that only helped raise the mood of the festival. The pair had now reached the center of the camp, and were hit with waves of good smells, heavy laughter, and slaps on the back. The clearing was completely covered in decorations. Banners and shrines covered any spot that did not hold a game or arena. In the center of the celebration however, there was a bonfire the size of a troll. It roared and flickered as it gave off waves of heat. People were laughing, eating, and drinking and generally just waiting for the alpha to come before the pack and start the first meeting.
Virgil, though he wasn't a fan of crowds, couldn't help but get a warm feeling on the inside of his chest. There was so much joy and hope in the air, it was hard for the emo to keep his grumpy attitude. Rather suddenly Patton grabbed his hand and pointed over to a pups game that had been set up, by the older wolves in the pack.
"Let's go over there, Virge!" The cheerful teen said as he started to drag Virgil in towards the game "Look they're giving away prizes!"
They were now standing in line and Patton was almost jumping up and down in excitement.
"Pat, this is a kids game." Virgil hissed keeping his voice low and his hood up. Embarrassed to be standing in line for something he was much too old to do.
"But Virgil Look! They have a stuffed wolf toy!" Virgil locked eyes with his friend standing next to him, and immediately fell victim to Patton's signature puppy dog eyes. Letting out a light sigh Virgil let out a light fine, which made Patton squeak in excitement.
Virgil just wanted the festival to be over with. He hadn't stopped worrying about the human that he had left in the woods. With a slight anxious rubbing of his arm, Virgil waited in line with the overexcited Patton. Stepping up every so often after a pup had finished their round of the game. Patton was now ecstatically bobbing up and down. They only had one more person in line in front of them. Quickly the child finished, picked out their prize and made their way over to what Virgil assumed to be their parents to show off the stuffed bear that they had just won.
With a slight smile on his face, Virgil turned his head to see Patton making a poor attempt at trying to win the wolf plush. See, Virgil hadn't taken a look at what the game was until he was at the front of the line. The game in question was, in fact, something quite similar to skee ball, but in this case, the holes werewolf heads and the ball was painted to look like the moon. Which Virgil found to be somewhat amusing. Crossing his arms Virgil let out a light chuckle, Patton was really bad at this.
The Wereraven watched as his friend tried and failed several times to get any points higher than ten. However, it seemed the empath was out of luck, all he was able to win was a sad little wooden figurine. With a slightly sad slouch, Patton bent down to look through the basket that held the little wooden figures.
It was Virgil's turn next, and in all honesty, He wasn't extremely interested in any of the prizes the game had to offer, but if he could he was going to try and win the wolf plush for Patton.
"You get 5 shots. Make them count." The game supervisor gruffed out, handing Virgil 5 white wooden balls that were painted to look like the full moon.
Sloping his arm down he took his first shot, immediately sending the ball into the top right corner, earning himself 100 points. Pat clapped and cheered in the background, calling things like "That's MY Son!" "Way to Go kiddo!!!!!" "Your Shots are OVER the MOON!" after each shot.
Each call providing an ample amount of embarrassment, making Virgils face burn. And by the time that he had rolled all 5 balls his face was completely flushed. The Game stand worker grinned clearly holding in a laugh as he showed Virgil the prizes he was allowed to pick out of. In fact, Virgil had done so well the man running the stand said that he could pick a large and small prize as long as "This stays between us." After all, It wasn't like the guy was making money off this, it was a game for kids at a family festival.
Virgil embarrassedly chose the plush Patton had so dearly wanted and a little raven pendant that Virgil wasn't too sure what he was going to do with. Roman flashed through Virgil's head, as he hurriedly pushed the pendant into his pocket.
Quickly Virgil stuffed the little plushed wolf into Patton's hands, making the other let out an excited sweal before giving the little wolf the biggest hug Virgil had ever seen.
"I will name you Sir Wolfington of Wolfsburg" Patton remarked grinning at Virgil before they started to make their way back to the fire.
The Alpha of the pack had started to talk asking people to settle down so the festivities could get started. Virgil and Patton sat down next to each other, some logs had been set up to act as seats of sorts. Getting somewhat comfortable Virgil put his hands in his pockets and looked up at the Woman talking in front of him, ready for the day to be over so he could go and check on Roman.
"-Settle down now everyone, and let's get started." The leader Ushered everyone to a seat, "First, we will be welcoming some new pups into the Pack! Fern has just given birth to two new pups!" Howls and cheers erupted from the crowd, and in particular, Virgil spotted a woman who was much more enthusiastic than the rest, Patton leaned over to Virgil and Whispered in his ear "That's Sasha, Ferns Mate." Virgil blushed realizing that he had been staring.
Turning to look back at the Alpha, the cheers started to die down, Once again allowing the Leaders voice to be heard over the other werewolves in the area. "And, Without further ado, let's get this party started!"
Cheers once again erupted causing Virgil to cover his ears. He had never been a fan of loud noises.
Patton touched his shoulder reassuringly As if saying everything was gonna be ok.
~TIME SKIP~With an exhausted sigh, Virgil returned to his tent. The evening had started to wrap up and Patton had volunteered to stay behind and help clean up.
Flopping down on the bed, the furniture let out a groan under the sudden weight.
Virgil placed the back of his hand on his head and took a deep breath. The teen was now staring up at the top of the tent as he took a moment for himself.
He had been around people all day and his battery was starting to run low, and it wasn't very high, to begin with.
Closing his eyes for a moment Virgil whimpered slightly. He didn't want to move and leave his tent again. To the socially anxious purple-haired wereraven, that sounded like absolute hell. It felt as if the weight of the world was pushing down on him as he let out a breath. But something had been bothering him ever since he entered the tent...As he started to breathe in Virgil remembered
"Fuck"
bolting upwards, the weight of the world forgotten as he remembered the knight he had left in the woods.
"Roman."
