David's POV
"Hey, so how did the interview go?" Chris asks eagerly. I haven't seen her in a couple days and she has been trying to ask but it's not something I could explain over text and I haven't had anytime to call her.
"It was interesting." I start to say and stop for a moment collecting my thoughts.
"Interesting, that's all you're giving me! Moore, don't do this to me." She says, I laugh and motion for her to sit down.
"It went well, then it got a little weird, but then it went well again." I can see Chris's eyes widen as she listens to me and she fights with herself but she doesn't say anything. "I realized when I walked into the cafe that I had no idea who I was looking for, so it started off awkward but when we got past the moment of figuring out who we were it went well. She seems smart, funny and capable. She answered my interview questions like a pro, something I wasn't expecting with her past experience. She does know French and a lot of other things too it seems." I stop there and think back to what happened on the street that day. I remember it so clearly, the squealing of the tires, the car hitting the phone pole, the other car hitting Mark.
"David, where'd you go. What other things does she know? And what does she look like, does she look like a nanny?" She kind of laughs and I'm not sure why.
"Sorry, you know the accident that happened outside the cafe that day, we saw it all happen." Chris gasps, "You did, I didn't see your name on any of the reports."
"That's because I was in plain clothes. But Ashley just ran out there as soon as it happened, before I did, and I am trained for that. Everyone else was just standing around and she ran straight out and assessed the situation. She went over to the one guy who hit the telephone pole, gave him a look, told him to lay down and gave him her jacket to put his head on. Then she ran over to Mark, the guy who was hit by the car and started talking to him, and asking him a couple questions. That's when I went over to help and she forcefully told me to stop. She told me to stop doing what I was doing and go and support his neck until the ambulance arrived." Chris is taking all this in, and I can see all the questions on her face but she is letting me finish.
"When they did arrive, she went straight to the paramedics and starting talking in medical lingo. How would she know all of that?" Chris looks at me and she can tell I want her to speak now.
"She's the one that had the first aid training right? I guess maybe she learnt it there?" She tells me and gives me a weird look, like why didn't I figure that out.
"No, I know. Yes, she's the one. But the things she was doing and saying were way above some first aid training." I tell her.
"Okay, well is that really such a bad thing? So she know's more first aid than you originally thought. She's taking care of your kids David. Not a bad thing." She says as she gives me a pointed look. And I do see her point, I do, I just feel like there is something Ashley isn't telling me. I'll keep an eye on her, and I hope she tells me in the future.
"So, was that the weird thing?"
"Yes, and also, I tried calling her references and both numbers are out of service. And when I googled the places she gave me the same numbers were online. She did had a few reference letters but I would like to talk to an actual person."
"Huh, that is weird. Did you try running the names through our system to find different contact information?"
"Yes, nothing came up."
"Well, you did say she worked as a server, maybe the places she worked were a little divey and don't keep up to date contact information, you know as well as I do some of the places we have around here." Don't I know it.
"I guess you're right." Then she jumps back into the conversation quickly,
"And you said things went better after that?" Right, when she came over to my house I nearly fell over forgetting how beautiful she was, then watching her interact with my kids almost sent me over the edge. I don't know what I am going to do. I can feel there is something wrong in my gut, but I know she isn't a bad person.
"Earth to David, where did you go again?"
"Sorry, was just thinking about her."
"She's really gotten to you eh?" Chris says, and I can't tell if I see some smugness in her look.
"No, she hasn't" I say defensively. Chris smiles at me,
"Suuure. So she's pretty, isn't she. When can I meet her?"
"She's normal looking Chris, jeez." I can't let on how much Ashley has effected me, Chris will never let it go.
"Uh huh. Well how did it go with the kids. Did they take to her? You had her over right. You texted me she was coming over yesterday."
"Yes, she did. She is moved in. She met the kids, Lauren already loves her. Joe is indifferent and Jackson keeps telling me he doesn't need a nanny. Which I know, but I feel better knowing there is someone around keeping an eye on him." Which is true, he doesn't need someone watching him at all hours, but he's in a new living situation, a new school and is without his mother.
"You moved her in already, that was fast." She says looking sort of stunned.
"I know, but I was called in to work and needed someone to watch the kids."
"I wasn't working yesterday, and you knew that. I could have come and watched the kids." She tells me.
"I know, but it was just easier to show her around while she was there, and get her to follow me while I took the kids to school so she knew where to pick them up. I walked her into the office so the school would know she was picking them up. It was just easier Chris." She is giving me such a hard time and I have no idea why.
"Fine, but I want to meet her. And soon. I love those kids just as much as you do, and if you think this Ashley so great, I want to see." I knew this was coming, I was just hoping it would be a week or so, some time to be able to control my emotions around Ashley.
"Okay, Ashley said she is cooking dinner for us tonight, told me she wants to win over the kids. I think she said she is making lasagna with garlic bread and some sort of salad. She just said it's full of cheese and the kids should love it." I wave my hand at her and take a seat at my desk and turn around to my computer.
"Lasagna sounds delicious. Count me in. Make sure you call her and let her know someone else is coming for dinner so she makes enough."
"Its Lasagna, how could she not make enough, that's not necessary. I don't want to overwhelm her on her first day."
"And you think just showing up with company wont overwhelm her." She says as she pokes my back and makes me turn around to see her.
"Fine, I'll call her." I say annoyed, I don't want to have to hear her voice and then be thinking about her all day, I have to concentrate. We have a witness to find.
"Put her on speaker." Chris says with a giggle.
"No." Is all I say and as I turn around I see a wide grin in Chris' face. I will definitely have to put on a show tonight and put her assumptions to rest. I can't have her as a constant reminder as well.------------
After Chris interrogated me about Ashley we finally got back to work but I have gotten no where. The information Chris got from her friends has been a dead end. Where ever this witness is she is long gone. I just hope that she is hidden somewhere, or someone know's where she is so that this court date holds. I know that after a given amount of time, if there is no location on the key witness we will lose the court date and Luis will be in the wind. Again.
"Chris, have you tired calling your friends from Canada again, see if they have anything we don't. Or if anything new has come up?" I ask but I already know the answer. She sighs,
"No, they told me they would call me if anything came up. And they will call David, if anything does. And that's only if. Don't hold your breath for something." She tells me.
"Thanks." I say and turn back around to my computer. There has to be something we haven't thought of. How far could someone go without ID, and means. They would have to have money, or a way of making money. This gets me thinking.
"Hey Chris. Your friends, they talked to the WITSEC guy right?"
"Yes." She says tired. She is working on the current case we have, nothing major and I feel bad for not pulling my weight recently but I can't let this go.
"And they said he seemed to really like this woman. Do you think he might have helped her run. Maybe set her up somewhere. Canada is a big place. He could have her off the grid." Chris kind of comes to life at that thought, she stops what she is doing and turns around to face me,
"Now that you mention it, they thought he wasn't giving them the whole truth. Maybe you're onto something."
"Let's look at where she was last held, at the area around her and see if there is anywhere he could have taken her. Lets get access to everything. See if maybe we can get some satellite imagery, maybe there are structure's not on any map." I can see a little fire in Chris's eyes now.
"On it." Is all she says before she turns back around and start vigorously tapping on her keyboard. I am also looking up just on google maps what is around there. I sort of take a step back when I realize there is a massive amount of space. And what looks like to be a lot of dense forest to the west, but it's the first lead, if that's what you can even call this, that we have had and it gives us a little hope.A few hours later, we are still making phone calls and we will have everything we need in the next couple days. But it's getting late and I almost forgot about dinner. Not that it's for me, she's won me over already, it's for the kids, but I still want to be there.
"Hey Chris, that's enough for one day. We'll pick it up tomorrow. Are you still feeling up for dinner with the new nanny." I think she either lost track of time or completely forgot about it because she jumps out of her chair and grabs her jacket and bag.
"Let's go Moore. I can't wait to meet the new love of your life." I roll my eyes at her and she laughs.
"Ha, ha. Very funny Chris. Let's get out of here." And with that we head out and I am already thinking about Ashley.
