Slow and steady, Marissa told herself as she moved over to the door. They didn't want to make a single sound and have anyone coming in to check on them.
Wouldn't that just be our luck, she almost snorted.
Randy moved ahead of her and put his ear to the door. She had to hand it to him, he wasn't as shaky on her feet as she would have expected him. He seemed to be gaining energy the further he got from those cages. Seems like she'd have to baby-proof anything silver in her house if she was ever going to invite him over for pizza night again.
He reached out and slowly switched the light off, showing just the light beneath the door. She was about to ask him what he was doing, when a shadow moved past, blocking the light
When he started opening the door, she felt her heart pound louder. Less than a second later, he closed it and moved as close as he could to whisper directly into her ear.
"We've stopped making any noise at all in here and they might find that suspicious and come check on us. We need to be quick. There's probably another room down the corridor but I can't hear anything from that direction. I don't know if there's anything there that might be useful. I'm going to take a quick look and come back for you. Just don't move.".,
Marissa didn't have a chance to protest because he was slipping through the door and she was rushing to catch it in case it slammed closed. In the dark, she was terrified. She was alone and had no idea what she was going to do if the werewolves decided at that moment to see what had made them go completely silent. Actually, she knew exactly what she would do. She'd fight and scream, and hopefully get revenge on the idiota that had knocked her out. If she got her hands on that traitorous doctor, she'd feel even better.
The door opening had her snapping out of it and rearing back to kick the door shut, hopefully breaking whatever limb got trapped between the door and the door frame. But it was Randy sliding in before she could blink, thankfully, and pulling her towards the door he'd kept open. He lifted her by the waist off the ground and pulled her out of the door, the corridor speeding by in silence.
Werewolf speed and strength were definitely bonuses.
He led her to a door and she reached out to slowly open it. They rushed in and he placed her on the ground. The room was an office as large as the cage room had been. The lights in the office were off, but everything was lit up through the window by the moon. Thankful that the room had an easy escape, Marissa went to the desk whilst pointing Randy towards the window. He nodded and moved to open it whilst she tried to find anything she could use at the desk. A map would be useful since she had no idea where they were, but she'd take anything she could get that would help them escape.
I'll be taking that, she thought to herself as she spotted the thin letter opener and slipped into her camping boot. Next time they were stuck in a cage, she was not going to strip down or get forced in without making someone bleed first.
She kept carefully scanning the desk for anything else that they could use. The phone was completely out of the question since anyone could hear them, and there was no cordless or cellphone in sight. With nothing apparent on the surface, she slowly started pulling the drawers out. She started from the bottom drawer, hoping that whoever owned the office had left their bag in the lower drawer and she'd be able to find something in it.
There was nothing, not even a spare pencil. Who had a desk and didn't put anything in it?
Probably someone who isn't a real Sheriff, she snorted.
She tried the other drawers, but only the top one was locked. She pulled the letter opener back out of her boot, and tried to jimmy the lock. Randy was there almost instantly, holding her hand still. He just tapped his ear when she looked at him, and she knew that the noise she'd been about to make must have been too loud. She replaced the knife back into her boot.
