Chapter 6. Unraveling The Past
•Sawyer P.O.V•
"We'll adopt them," She says, smiling brightly at me. I stand here, shell shocked on what just came out of her mouth. She cant possibly be serious, can she?
"W-what?" I stutter out, hot tears flooding my eyes. Her face softens and I watch her blurry figure step forward, her arms wrapping around me, pulling me into a hug. She rubs my back soothingly as I sob on her shoulder.
I pull back slightly, wiping my face with the back of my hand, "Thank you Caroline," I say, cracking a smile.
I came over earlier to work on the project when Caroline called me into the kitchen. She told me that Chance told her about how I needed someone to take the kids, and than she told me she was going to adopt both Britain and Meryl. She said there was plenty of room and it wouldn't be a problem.
Hence the reason I'm bawling
Because these kids deserve a great life and I know Caroline and Rick will give it to them. Plus with Chance, Keith, Hope and Bronwyn, I think they'll be just fine.
I hear movement behind me and Caroline's voice, "Take her to lie down." Within seconds, I'm surrounded with the smell of Chance. He swiftly picks me up bridal style and carries me. My eyelids begin to bob shut, but I will myself to stay awake.
I feel Chance lay me down, scanning the room; I realise its Chance's bedroom. I sit up just as Chance sits down across from me. Bracing myself, I speak, "There was three girls, dad swore he was cursed," I mumble out, part of my mind numb.
"Sawyer…" Chance trails off, sadness in his golden eyes. I put my pointer finger on his lips, shutting him up completely. The whole time he stares at me, I remove my finger and continue speaking, telling him what had happened.
"Fiona was the oldest, she would have been twenty now. God only knows how much I miss her," I add on, pausing for a moment. Fighting off the sleep that's trying to consume me.
"Fiona was sick, she died from a rare blood cancer when she was twelve. Only eight years ago, I lost my big s-sister." I choke out, tears falling freely again, but I choose to ignore them.
I sigh deeply, "May was the baby, she didn't really know Fiona, but her death impacted May as well." I wipe my face off, Chance's eyes on me, "It was my first and last sleepover I ever had…"I trail off.
I clear my throat, "My Mom, Dad and May died in a house fire three years ago. They died together in their sleep." I twist my fingers, distracting myself from the memories that haunt me every time I close my eyes, "May was only ten." I whisper, more to myself.
I look up to see Chance, tears sliding down his face, puzzling me, "Whats wrong?" I question. He moves closer, wrapping his arms around my waist. He nuzzles his face into my neck, "You don't deserve any of that." He mumbles.
I laugh lightly, brushing his hair gently with my fingers, "It made me who I am today," I whisper. I don't exactly know when it happened, but somewhere between talking, Chance fell asleep on me. His shallow breathing and relaxed face proves it.
I suck in a breath and try to peel off his arms, but that seems to make it worse; his arms tightened around me and he pulled me into him. He nuzzles closer into me and his breath fans across my face.
And somehow, I fell asleep to the sound of his shallow breathing and beating heart.
