Recap: Cate nodded and awkwardly turned back to her drink. I grabbed her wrist, and she looked at me, shocked. Then, I kissed her.
NIALL'S POV
Cate looked up at me, a mixture of emotions written on her face. First she looked surprised, but that quickly changed to a look of...I'm not even sure. I expected her to run screaming out of the room. But she just stood there. Then she kissed me back. When we let go, she breathed. "Uh, wow," she said, smiling.
"Sorry," I said.
"No, no. It's fine. No, actually, it's great."
I smiled, "Good," and I kissed her again. Only this time, Mary came into the room, holding an empty cup. We both froze, letting go. Mary's face was twisted in..anger? Surprise? I couldn't tell. Finally, she spoke, shaking her head.
"W-what? Cate?"
Cate had a look of desperation on her face. I wasn't quite sure what was going on. Why is she upset? I'm not dating Mary. "Mar..." Cate whispered, but Mary just shook her head and ran out of the room. I don't get girls at all.
MARY'S POV
How could she do that? Niall was the father of my child, and she's making out with him?! It pissed me off. I briskly walked out of the kitchen, out of the living room, and into the brightly lit hallway. The boys were confused, looking at me as I slammed the door behind me.
I ran down the hall, ignoring the doorman when he shouted for me to stop. I ran down the street, ignoring the pedestrians looking at me. I only stopped when Cate screamed. I stopped, and looked at her. "What?" I cried. She had a look of despair on her face.
"Your legs."
What was she talking about? I look down and see. My legs are dripping...with blood. Now everything is surreal. I'm looking down at myself, screaming. I slump to the ground while Cate pulls out her phone and dials 911. I watch Niall catch up and see the bloody mess, a look of horror on his face.
Then, darkness.
When I awake, I'm lying in a hospital bed. My vision is blurry, but I see that the boys and Cate are here, all of their faces creased with worry. Harry's sitting on the bed, holding my hand. He notices me first. "Mar? Guys, she's awake!" They all come to my side, smiling and excited.
"What happened?" I ask.
Harry looks down. "Um..."
"What?" I ask again, scared.
Niall looked on the verge of tears. "...You lost the baby."
Oh, great. Another out of body experience to tell the folks back home. Once again, I'm looking down at myself. There's a high pitched screaming. "Cut it out," I say, before I realize that it's me screaming. Then a doctor comes in.
"This'll calm her down," he explains, sticking a needle in my arm. And then it's dark.
NIALL'S POV
I sat next to Mary, who was quiet and sleeping peacefully. That's what it looked like, anyway. I couldn't imagine what was going through her head.
I'm pretty sure all of us were exhausted. After Mary collapsed, Cate had called 911, and I had called the boys and told them to meet us at the hospital. In the ambulance, the medic had determined she collapsed from the shock of seeing the blood. Once we had gotten to the hospital, the doctor said she would be out for a while. And she was - for a whole day. During that time, the doctor told us the news. That because of her running, she had damaged the baby, and eventually miscarriaged.
It was my fault, that's what I told myself. All my fault. If I had said something at the theater, Mary wouldn't have chased me. If I hadn't kissed Cate, Mary wouldn't have run. Cate. She was sitting next to me, burying her head in my shoulder.
The doctor realized we were still sitting there an hour later and told us to get something to eat, that she would be fine. So we did. Of course, we were all reluctant to leave her, but we had to eat. I was starving.
We all sat crowded at a white plastic table, not touching our food, exhaustion and sadness written clearly across our faces. "This fucking sucks," Harry says.
I scoffed. "You think it sucks for you? It was my baby."
"Yeah, but she's my girlfriend."
I stood up, getting angry. "Yeah, so?" Liam steps in.
"You guys, stop. Seriously. We're here for Mary."
Harry sighs. "You're right."
"Yeah," I say. "I just wish we found out the gender."
Zayn shrugs. "Maybe it was better that we didn't."
We head back upstairs without touching our food. The doctor comes into the room and tells us that Mary can go home when she wakes up. A small victory. He gives us medicine to give her to reduce the shock and calm her down. Happy pills.
Finally, a few hours later, she wakes up. The nurse put some 'happy pills' in her food. It pained me to see her eat it, oblivious to what she was eating. But it's what's best, I tell myself. We all pile into the van, Mary asleep, her head in Harry's lap, and Cate snuggled against me. I felt guilty, being with Cate after what just happened. But I was with her anyway.
When we got back to the hotel, Paul led us through a back entrance, since the lobby was swarming with curious reporters. We got to our rooms okay, but Paul had an emergency meeting in Liam's room. (His room was the cleanest) "I've canceled all the concert's in the next 3 days," he said solemnly. "I figure you could all use a few days off."
Of course, we didn't want to upset our fans, but I prayed they would understand. Mary went straight back to sleep in Harry's bed, and the rest of us went to get something to eat. Everything had sunk in, so I guess we were feeling a little better.
We went to a fast food restaurant and ate our weight in hamburgers and fries. We hadn't eaten in at least a day, so as you can imagine, along with my usual hunger, I was starving. We brought home some food for Mary when she woke up, since I imagine it would be better than cold hospital mashed potatoes.
If you can believe it, Mary slept for another whole day. When she woke up, she went straight to the fridge, where her cold hamburgers were waiting. She scarfed those down, then four more after we went back to the restaurant and got more.
When we were feeling up to it, we decided to have a concert in the park, kind of to make up for the canceled ones. A good amount of people showed up, and we played about 5 songs, me on the guitar. Halfway through Tell Me a Lie, Paul ushers us away. "What?" we all ask.
"Mary got a call," he says. "From the doctor."
We didn't need him to say any more. We apologised and went to the hospital. Mary was in her old room, looking scared and curious. It was weird, being back in this room after only a day. But soon, the doctor came in with a manila envelope. "This," he says, no doubt pausing for dramatic effect, "Is your results. From the scan we did of your uterus, right before you left."
We were quiet as he pinned the pictures to the wall. Everything looked normal, but of course, I'm not a doctor. "What's that blob?" Mary asks, breaking the silence. I saw it now. It was tiny, no bigger than an orange.
The doctor smiled. "You had twins. By some miracle, one survived."
"So does that mean...?"
"You still have a baby."

FanfictionUPDATE: Yikes this is embarrassing. **DISCLAIMER** I wrote this when I was twelve years old. There is a lot of errors, and no, the British do not celebrate our independence. It's overall a book that I'm not proud of. But you guys seem to like it...
