Chapter 3 | Face Reveal

"I think that we are all mentally ill. Those of us outside the asylums only hide it a bit better - and maybe not all that much better after all."

- Stephen King

I sit at the foot of the bed, shifting uncomfortably as I try to process the unpalatable atmosphere I have created. I recount the events that led to my mental breakdown a day ago, to four friends who wear an expression of incredulity on their faces. They intently listen to every word.

"Dude, you sure it wasn't just some random kid, you know, typical troublemakers?" Ryan speaks first.

"Yeah, it could just as easily be some hoax your taking way too seriously...I mean do you remember I played a similar prank on my Aunt Sylvia...yeah that did not go well." Julie's eyes can tell that she is far from the topic that is being discussed.

"Guys I know what I saw okay? Besides, even if I agree for the sake of argument that that was some kid, the message on the screen...?" I justify hoping that they would at least show some sign of belief.

They look at each other with total doubt, no, worse; it is worry.

I get up to fetch the rolled parchment that has been left dormant in my study drawer for the past day and a half.

I felt like reading what's in it but I didn't too. That has been the consistent story for the past days.

I was diagnosed with O.C.D. 7 years ago (not saying my indecisiveness, in this case was due to it). So I knew what confusion was like in the gloomiest and darkest of ways; events in my life I never want to look back to, which nonetheless have shaped me into the introvert I am.

The more friends you make, I picked up, the more holes people find inside you to make bigger. And holes have always been made to trap, swallow whole and complete, never giving back, even if it is you yourself that you have lost inside it.

"We get it Joey, you were afraid. But we're here for you man." Andrew soothes.

Here for you.

That phrase reverberates in my mind, and I understand why I needed someone with me for something so dumb. I was clearly making a big deal out of this. They knew it and so did I.

"Yeah mate whatever ya want us for, we're here," Mack says, "even if it's to help you read something." He finishes, amused by himself. I roll my eyes. "Sometimes I wonder what I would do without you guys." I say, my voice breaking half way through.

I unfurl the paper. My friends lean forward trying to steal a peek, little do they know that I am going to read this out loud.

I breathe.

The letters are in a stylistic font, handwritten with black ink. It looked like the kind of print that gets you to think that it's printed but you know it's not. I begin reading.

"The powers of the sun courses through your veins Jonas Clive. Limitless power is in your disposal and I, the Wizard of The Council, Defender of the fourth universe, and your soon-to-be mentor, summon you and your acquaintances to the home of mysteries, that I shall reveal for you, those mysteries that will show you purpose in plight."
