Gaten and his family were having dinner in the dining room when they heard the house phone start to ring out of the blue. Everyone looked confused, considering no one really called the house phone at dinnertime.

His mother, Angela, stood with her brows knitted in confusion. "I'll go see who that is" both Gaten and his father nodded, going back to their earlier conversation

When the family went silent again everyone knew there was  a tension building in the air as they awaited Angela's return

she returned looking pale and shocked "w-we have a funeral to get to tomorrow, all of you be up early" her voice was hoarse.

Gaten's father stood and went to comfort his wife "what's happened, darling?"

"Who's dead? " asked Jack, Gaten's twelve year-old brother.

Angela looked to her husband, her eyes shimmering with tears "Madeleine... I had no idea, sh-she had... cancer,  and this morning she... she-"

"Madeleine? Madeleine Lagerfeld!?" His father cut in. He suddenly looked pained "Oh Lord "

His father held Angela to his chest as she cried, rubbing her back soothingly.

Now Gaten stood as well, "who's Madeleine Lagerfeld? Is she some one we know? "

"Knew" Jack cut in, everyone ignored him. "What? Past tense for the dead, we all know it"

His mother pulled away from his father to look at him, "she was an old friend of mine" she shook her head "her daughters!"

"Daughters?" Gaten asked

His mother wiped at her eyes "her eldest, she goes to your school, Diane Melvin"

Gaten knew of Diane, but he didn't know her

Although he could've sworn she was a junior too the previous year

Suddenly he understood. He could never imagine losing his mother....

The next day they left for the funeral forty minutes before it started. Angela had said that morning it was important she spoke to Diane, Madeleine's daughter

When they arrived at the cemetery where the funeral was being held Gaten immediately recognized Diane, she had been in his home economics class the previous year.

She was sitting at the front. He stared at her. She may have been his age but all he saw was a yellow-faced sobbing young girl who had just lost her mother.

He felt empathy at the sight of her, he really did

His mother approached Diane and an elderly couple standing near her. He watched as his mother extended  her hand to the couple (who both looked stony faced and guarded, not to mention extremely sad) then to Diane, whose face he could not see.

He was stupidly tempted to go and introduce himself as well, but he refrained from doing so.

So all he did for the next three hours was stare at the family that he had a connection with that he didn't understand.

A/N- just to be clear this book is much more lighthearted than this, this is just so you can sort of understand how Gaten comes into the story. Also, Diane is in fact the main character, this book will be in first person starting from chapter one and will be from her point of view.
